    Tonka Toy stuff.

I take pics of the jobs I do,partly out of pride in my job,and stuff I can put on a card for future job interviews.Though I may start a thread and add interesting jobs to it from time to time.
A few pics of the current job.
We have a failure of the bitumen road, water travelling thru the road.Roadtrains then pump the water to the surface, the water then is below the bitumen but cant escape.
Job prep,I had the boys cut a new drain to intercept the water and divert it to the creek,we removed the bitumen to start drying out the road and carted in what SHOULD have been enough gravel to do the job.
So todays task, rip up the gravel that was under the bitumen to see whats going on.Well, the road was built with 100mm of gravel on clay,it seems thats how country roads were built back when a big truck carted 20 tonnes, the road now is expected to carry LOTS of 60 tonne loads.
    New drain and gravel stockpiled.

Windrowed spoil ready to pick up.

There were 2 major wet spots at either end of the job,I dug them out with the grader whilst the loader was loading the spoil.

The gravel we stockpiled was supposed to do the whole job, every bit went into todays half,so back to carting gravel in tommorow. The boys wernt happy,it took until 2pm to cart all the spoil out, they were complaining that we would be there until dark, had it all filled in and safe by 4.10pm
Next move after stockpiling the gravel is to repeat the process on the other side, then cement stabalise the running surface.I have 6 tonnes of cement onsite ready for that.
Will add a few more pics as the job is done.

Your gear cruncher mates caused this damage and will be keeping me employed for years to come
The road was never designed to carry the trucks running on there,60t running tri-dollys.After following a few trucks I can see who is really doing the damage, the air-baged trailers. They really get a bump up and down when they hit a bump for some distance before settling down.Leaf sprung trailers dont do it anywhere near as bad from what Ive watched. The air-bagged trailers must be a nitemare to drag on a bad road surface.

It's ridiculous Andy, air suspension is considered road friendly and as such allowed to carry more weight per axle or axle group. I've been weighed as a legal 70 tonne B double and had differences of up to 5 tonne per wheel within an axle group. Load sharing, road friendly my hairy butt! The old, all but outlawed, Hendrickson walking beam spreads the weight over every wheel evenly. If air is so load sharing, why does it have so many traction issues?

did you want an answer to that or was it hypothetcial.

in case you wanted an answer I'll open with cost cutting poor maintenance and bad design.

Have been back at that job.We dug out the other side and put new gravel in.
Today we cement staibalised the job.6 tonnes of cement to mix in.
I ripped half the road width to 200mm and got the boys to spread 3 tonnes of cement over the rips. Then mixed it with the gravel, windrowed it then ripped the other side and got the boys to spread the cement again.
Only got pics of the cement work, the section is now ready to trim and seal.

Tommorows job, same thing 5ks up the road, smaller job this time, will get pics as that job is running water in the new drain.

Got my first fire job for the season yesterday, putting firebrakes in around a granite hill,a fire started in yesterdays heat from a smouldering fire that went out a month ago, looking to be a bad fire season here.
