    And the problem is?

You knew where it was, it hadn't rolled into a drain.

That's when you need a magnet on a stick.

"managed to drop the sump plug into the bucket with the used engine oil." Reminds me of working in the bush on a D9L and dropping the plug down into the 4 foot deep rip I'd cut for the old oil to go into.
That was our oil change procedure back 30 years...drop the pick and cut a rip, then reverse over it, undo the plug and hopefully hold onto it without getting scalded by the hot oil shooting out!
Don't tell the greenies about that procedure....
Luckily (for my job) the store had another in stock so the machine didn't stand idle for days waiting for Perth to send up a new one.

My pet hate is the brass plugs with the magnet in them...

NEver drop one of them into a greenie friendly mostly plastic waste oil/ grease/water seperator.. While most of the damn thing is plastic the body of the drain valve is not. The drain plug, if dropped will fall all the way through then stick to that preventing you from closing the valve for the individual section(s) it will also not let go of the valve body in preference for your magnet on a stick.

you will wind up draining the whole bloody thing. then removing the valve so you can get it out.
