For anyone else planning to go in top the cbd I can recommend docklands for parking and the free trams in. Cost us $7 for parking for up to 4 hours and it's open 24/7!

Yep. Melbourne's public transport system isn't particularly friendly for out of towners. It's been like that for years.
IMO, the biggest mistake they made was getting rid of the conductors on the trams.
I used to travel the trams a lot and saw many an overseas tourist get on the tram and ask the passengers "Where do I get a ticket?". Funny thing, most of the passengers had no idea where to get a ticket. Most people using the trams were commuters and had no need to buy tram tickets in Melbourne CBD so had no idea where to get them from in the CBD.
