    Bow Fishing - Greens Object

That looney David Shoebridge is at it again. This time he has gotten the SMH to publish an article claiming that people may mistake a platypus for a carp and shoot it with a bow and arrow if bow fishing is legalised.

Carp bow fishing trial threatens native species, opponents say

Any pursuit that gets stinking carp out of our inland waterways has got to be a good thing.

Sure if anyone does transgress any protected species law, bag limit or size limit - throw the book at them but to use the old "One size fits all lowest common denominator" solution - ban everyone is as predicable as Toyota owners bagging Landies.

I am not sure what their problem is? Is it that people enjoy putting a feral creature away that upsets their delicate sensibilities.

I was at a property where I used to do a lot of hunting of ferals such as pigs, goats foxes, hares and rabbits right back into the mid sixties with my dad. We used to get a good feed of yellowbellys, and cod from the river on his block.

If you see it now, it is just a muddy mess due to the constant turning of the bottom and undermining of the banks due to carp. In the last drought I saw the river down to pools where literally thousands of carp were sucking the last bit of oxygen out of the water.

I was also down on the Turon behind Sofala where I used to get a nice trout of two and all that I saw in the river were carp.

These greenies only solution to everything is:

I agree that there is the very small possibility for someone to mistakenly shoot something other than carp,
BUT, I am certain there its a probability a couple of orders higher that a non target species will be strangled and tangled in discarded line and hooks.

The big difference being that many don't think twice about losing 20c of line and hook, but few archers will take a chance on $20 of arrow and head!
I would enjoy my paddles on the local river much more without retrieving others cut lines. Though I wouldn't have as big a collection of lures
    Cheers, BDave.

Very valid and logical point Dave.... just not sure the decision makers take logic into account at times.

When we had a our property up on the Murray that had a large billabong that covered about 100 acres in a horse shoe shape, we used to kill carp when water level was reduced to muddy pools.
We used whatever we had on hand, i have a compound bow and crossbow and had a 22 magnum and air rifle at the time but also used a strong rake or home made spears.
One year my mate came up with his 30/06, 44 mag and 357 mag pistols, at one stage we had hundreds lined up dead on the bank.

I hope you ploughed the carp into adjacent fields to improve the pasture?

Never one to waste a resource and I'm very into recycling.

Just to add some real meat to the discussion I have attached the Risk Assessment associated with the NSW bow-fishing proposal. That said, is is bleedingly obvious that such 'fishing' will have no significant impact on the distribution or abundance of European Carp in our natural waterways.

    Cheers
