Time for a new mechanic me thinks.![]()
Preparing to leave from the south coast last week my wife towed the boat trailer to the ramp. She said that the brake light was on. This is in my trusty nothing to go wrong 1993 Hilux. I checked the brake fluid and it was a little low so I topped it up and we set off. I thought the brake pedal felt a little soft but the brakes were fine. Stopping at Albion Park for our coffee the light was on again so I topped up and drove cautiously leaving a good space behind the car in front. I had to top up again and we got home safely. Taking it to my repairer it was found that the new engine dump pipe fitted for me had a clamp that had rubbed through a steel brake line. Also the new dump pipe had been routed slightly from the old one and my mechanic had to remove a small section from the inner guard to extract the oil filter. Oh boy!!

I had a similar thing many years back on my Hillman Hunter. The clutch slave cylinder was replaced. That night I drove to the drive-in theatre and, as I pressed the clutch to go in, smoke poured out from under the bonnet and car. All the other cars around me seemed to disappear in all directions.
The mechanic had routed the plastic hydraulic line too close to the exhaust down pipes and the plastic had softened but not melted away. When I pressed the clutch, it had an aneurysm and failed, spraying fluid all over the exhaust.
I would have gone to a new mechanic after that but I was the useless bloody mechanic.

The job was done rush for me as we were going away and the engine pipe burned through, of course at the wrong time but better than when I was away.

Sounds more like a fitter( with no supervision?)than a mechanic.
A rush job is no excuse IMO.
It certantly would not be if the corenor had got involved.
Consider yourself fortunate given what could have been.
My wife always wants me to take stuff to "other people" to get fixed...... That way it'll be done right you see...... She gets annoyed when I say "Why pay someone else to break it, when I can do that myself" ..... "At least I know how to fix it after I've broken it this way"
