    Defender wake Friday night.

I have posted this on the events section but thought would give it a plug in general chat.

    Defender 1948-2016

This Friday 29th of January at approximately 7:30 PM Queensland time an historic moment will occur at Land Rover Solihull. The last Defender will be built, ending a line of 68 years of production.

The Defender and its predecessor the Land Rover that we now refer to as series vehicles is the face of exploration and adventure the world over. Few if any vehicles can claim a perigee like the Defender, still being hand built and to a casual observer unchanged in decades. In this age of technology rich vehicles becoming outdated almost as soon as they are released the Defender remained true to the original design philosophy. A simple utilitarian vehicle designed to do a job on or off road. Over 2 million Land Rover series and Defenders have now been built since 1948 and the last one will roll off the line the end of this week.

A few club members decided that this event can not go unnoticed and we have decided to mark the demise by holding a wake. We will gather at the exact time that the production ceases of the last Defender and celebrate the passing of an icon.

Finding out exactly when the last Defender was to be built has been quite a challenge. Our club member Derek has rang and emailed the factory as well as Land Rover monthly magazine on many occasions with different answers forthcoming and confusion was the result. However last night (Monday night) he finally got a result from Land Rover and that was confirmed shortly after by Dave Phillips from Land Rover Monthly magazine. As you can see we did not have a lot of notice to organize an event. I have attached the correspondence for interest sake.

    Details of the event.

We will be doing a BBQ sausage sizzle as well as finger food and snacks. This is a joint event with British Off Road and The Sunshine Coast Land Rover Owners Club. We hope to have at least one or two models present through the years, Series 1 , 2 , 2A , s3 as well as the different variants of Defenders.

Who can come?: Open to any owners or in fact anyone with an interest in Land Rovers whether you have a Series, Defender, Discovery, Range Rover or Freelander as they all were ultimately spawned from the Land Rover.

Where: British Off Road forest Glen. Queensland.

When : From 6.00 pm until around 8.00 pm. Friday 29th Jan. ( Please try and come early as we would like some photos in daylight.)

    What to bring BYO drinks.

    Dress: Black for mourning.

Cost: This is a free event.

If you are keen to come please let me or Derek know by Thursday for catering purposes. Brian: brianwolthers@gmail.com Derek: barcrest4044@bigpond.com

We have had a good response considering the late notice. Some of the vehicles coming are 107 series one, 80 inch series one, 101 forward control, an immaculate series 2a, many different variants of the defender.

Our local Sunshine Coast channel 7 news is putting some footage to air on Friday night which will be shot in tomorrow morning. (29th Jan)

Nice idea. Would like to make it, but probably won't be able to.

Given the Deefer's military heritage, perhaps someone could organise the Last Post to be played?

    Cheers

You are not at a funeral, Man. If anything, the Defender is marching off Parade, head held high. Get a piper to play the Black Bear, the most famous marching off parade tune,

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
