    CRAFT or Dementia?

Can't believe my stupidity. Today I did a run into town and spent half the day in there shopping and amongst other things bought some mower fuel. When I got home I decided to fill the 3, 5L containers I use from the jerry can and empty it and put it away. Normally I am religious about wearing boots when I am working in the shed but today I decided since it was only a simple job I would only wear the Japo riding boots. Guess what, while lifting a full 5L container of fuel onto the shelf the plastic handle on the container broke and guess where it landed - you guessed it, on my left big toenail. Much vocal words and a throbbing big toe later, I think I am going to lose the toenail! Got a feeling that I am not going to get much sleep tonight so I have swallowed some pain relief in the form of some homebrew rum - might dull the pain hopefully. At my age I should know better - last year I lost the nail on the right big toe when I tried to drag the wooden lid off a big crate by myself on wet concrete, with the thongs on also! I should know better as I am a firm believer of Murphys Law!!!
    Cheers......Brian

    Hey Brian,

Did something silly like that a while ago and used an old trick of my GP. I went to the chemist and bought a large bore hypodermic needle. Then I placed the tip in the middle of the affected nail and lightly turned it backwards and forwards to act like a little auger. When the needle breaks through it pops like Vesuvius. Simply squeeze out the gunk and then put on a bandaid. It saves your nail and the pain relief is palpable.

    Cheers,

Thankfully I haven't progressed that far Andrew. But I should have known better. Murphys law states that "anything that can go wrong WILL at the worst possible time" I have always been a firm believer in that! And being a trainer/assessor for years makes me ashamed of myself for doing what I did.

Yep, you're right, depending on how much sleep I get tonight I might use the cordless drill on the toenail tomorrow and let the pressure out - have done it before with good results. Just have to be careful you don't go too deep!!

Hence the "lightly" turning! My Doc did it real slow and real soft so I have always followed his lead. Wouldn't want to mess that little operation up! Ha ha

Red hot paper clip will go through it like butter - easy.

    Don't use a 1/4" drill like a guy I knew once

Geez Brian, you need to learn how to wear thongs, after all you are a Queenslander.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
