    There may be a chance you're mistaken in thinking the contacts are only on the phone.

    Log in to Gmail, and go to contacts - anything there will be automatically downloaded to any new Android phone.

    Mind you, I recently sorted out my mum's android phone - half her contacts were on the sim, and half on the device, and bugger all on her gmail account
