Andy, having all the power in the world wont mean squat with all the useless drivers out there. Most of us know, or realise our own strengths and weaknesses when on two wheels,,,, its the tossers around us that usually bring us undone,,, he'll be fine, like Chris's dad said, everybody's out to get you. My dad said the same thing when I got mine, and he didn't even ride :(
I reckon if I was to get another bike now, I'd be very subdued on it :angel:

Andy i wasn't talking about Lyndsay and his riding . I was doing all the right things and in a split second my life changed. Totally and forever there are no second chances. Just A few hours ago i was again drawn to a R1200GS i saw parked up and thought how much i missed riding. And here i now lie after taking my 3rd dose of painkillers since last night. I am lucky to have survived the big hit however god how i wish it hadn't happened.

Of one ship I was on, most of the other 20 guys who rode are not in such good shape. Many sadly, did it to themselves not just other people trying to kill them.

I do think there is a lot more dangerous things we did than ride bikes to be honest. I do think riding a low powered bike first is a very good idea before jumping on a beast of a bike.

"Defensive riding course" might be a great birthday present and it is fun as well

once rode a bull at a rodeo (mind you the ride was extremely short), that was more dangerous than any bike ride or crash I have ever had. And I tell ya for free its a long way down and a hard landing.

I was on a bloody fishing trip at the time and got waylayed

I'd recommend Champion Ride Days or something similar with tuition. Multiple groups based on speed and confidence, instructors on hand. Transfers well to the road.

Good luck to him! Pretty big power jump, but if it's one of the modern crop of litre-bikes, it should have traction control and power modes to use in the wet etc...?

The only advice I would give would be to strongly encourage the use of the right safety gear...

Best thing i ever did when i got my license back after a brief stint bikeless was to do a course at HART, been riding 30 years on road and 5 years before that off road.
Had one off when a driver didnt stop at a stop sign and t-boned me at slow speed when i was 18 and now i ride with eyes in the back of my head, i no longer do stupid things in high traffic area's - thats what country roads are for ;).

I've seen many riders of bikes like S1000 RR rely on traction control and ABS and encounter difficulty when they really need to rely on ability. I like the approach of learning on something more agricultural. Like driving a Defender before getting all comfy and letting a car drive you like a Disco Sport.
