I am putting into a fund at the moment that matures in 5 years. The intention is then to re-invest that.

We are in Unisuper. It has just been named Superannuation Fund of the Year. It is a very large fund. I don't think you have to work in education to join it.

They have various types of accounts. I think they made over 6% last year from memory. As an industry fund their charges are much lower than retail funds.


The advantage of super for retirement is that when putting money in it is only taxed at 15% instead of normal income tax rates. After you hit 55 in my case (check for your age) when you retire you can withdraw up to 10% of your balance tax free each year. Combine that with some government pension and a reasonable retirement income can be achieved. Of course, long-term investing of regular amounts, which can be small, adds up by achieving interest on interest so it compounds.

It is a lovely spot. We are only up there some weekends as we are working in Brisbane during the week. Planning to change that in 2019 if all goes well. If you spot a large white box its our 110 wagon trundling about. Will look out for you.

Maybe I should have invested in classic cars as they seem to be going up in value. Will my Defender be worth more than I paid for it in 20 years? Can only hope...

Maleny is actually quite a good little community with a lot of community feeling to it. Its not as touristy as Montville, for example.
Plus, its 415m above sea level (hence the nickname Rainy Maleny), its a lovely area, there are small rural blocks available and the 'big city' amenities are not far away.
I intend to settle in and go quietly feral...
