    Insurance

Today I have been shopping for insurance - my insurance policy for my two Landrovers is due in about three weeks, and I am mad at my current insurer - about two months ago I got hit by a roo behind the rear wheel, and investigated a claim (in the end the repair cost was less than my excess, so I ended up not claiming.) and found a number of shortcomings, including the fact that they sent me to their preferred panelbeater who took three weeks and two further visits before he produced a quote, and the fact that they were going to take away my no claim bonus.

It has been an illuminating experience. The first company (APIA) I had to convince (with difficulty) that Landrovers actually existed before 1972 - then they had to input the model manually. Their quote was much higher than my existing insurance for both vehicles.
The second one (Suncorp/GIO) was unable to quote at all since Landrovers were not made before 1972, after I managed to convince them that they are not made by either Toyota or Nissan.
The third one (NRMA) was at least helpful, and they do not take my no claim bonus for roos, although their price is substantially higher. I am not very enthusiastic about them because of problems I had with a storm damage claim (my farm insurance is with them) last year. Not that they wouldn't pay, but they lost paperwork and clearly had no idea what I was talking about - I spent hours on the phone trying to sort it out. Also a few months ago my son who is insured with them had a roo damage claim, which was handled very well - except for the incorrect assemble of the door lock linkage that left him a few weeks later with an unopenable driver's door that had to be broken open.
A problem that does exist is none of them are prepared to insure my County for the amount my existing insurer has it listed for ($11,200) - generally they will only go to about $7000. Can you really buy a good Isuzu engined County for this?

Shannons is good for enthusiast cars or odd marques. They also have a cheaper option if you don't drive the car every day.

We are covered for an agreed value of over $15K for the Disco with all mods listed with Affinity Risk Partners. They were the only ones to offer a competitive premium with sensible conditions.

Not sure if they cover cars not registered in Vic, but it's worth a try.

Affinity seem fine to me at the moment in Vic, but... touch wood... I haven't tested them with a claim.

I'm with GIO They did up my excess for raised suspension but no issue with insuring the landy. I've been with them for quite a while. They also acnowledged my no claim bonus from the previous insurance company. The only trouble Ive had with them was a couple of years ago with my last car. Once I offered to cancell my house, contents plus 2 cars (Comprehensive and CTP) coverage with them they quickly came to the game. I told them the value of my landy and they accepted it without any issues.

Since my last post AAMI have refused to insure my 1970 Landrover (all I'm after for it is 3rd party property, for heavens sake!). They suggested Shannons, who cannot help me because it is registered as primary production and in daily use.
You would think that insurers would encourage people with older cars to have third party property insurance, wouldn't you?

    Gearge,
I tried GIO this afternoon - they can't insure the 1970 Landrover because according to their computer Landrover did not make anything before 1972. This despite the fact that I already have Worker's Comp. with them.

We're with GIO with both our vehicles and our houses. Never had a problem with claims or dealing with them in any way. A claim every year without affecting my no claim bonus. Agreed value ($15 000 on 1995 V8 Disco).
When I rang to inform them of suspension mods and rear draw system, no hassles, and even found I'm insured off road at no extra cost.
