Getting water from tank to tap

I have a large rainwater tank next to a shed. I was thinking of putting a sink in the shed to wash hands and a tap for a washing machine (we shed camp during the holidays).

Without understanding the mechanics of it all, I have seen caravans that have water pumps that work when the tap is turned on and then turn off when the tap is turned off.

Is this something I could rig up easily enough?
What sort of tricks/pit falls are there to this?
Is it as simple as dropping a bit of hose into the water tank putting a pump in the middle and a tap on the end of another bit of hose?
It is the kind of thing I'd like to have a design for before I start drilling holes in the side of my shed.

    Anyone done this?

Yep, that would work. Assuming you want to use 12 volts here? eBay has lots of cheap 12 volt pressure pumps that have an inbuilt pressure switch. They are a diaphragm pump and self prime, so easy to plumb up and use.

If you have mains electricity then a small 240 pressure pump would be the go.

    yeah, thats about it...

small pressure pump with an inbuilt pressure switch and you're done.

you just have to worry about if you get a leak the pump will pump the tank dry.

its worth putting an accessory switch in so you can turn it off if your not using it. I know of some guys who wire it up on the same circuit as a light over the sink/tap/bathroom so that it wont run if the lights arent on.

If the normal level of water in your tank is say 2m above the outlets you won't even need a pump. Just use 1" or bigger ag poly and it will be just like metro mains.

I have a couple of 22.5k tanks hooked up through a 240v pressure pump that I only switch on for big flow. Rest of the time gravity is fine if the lines are big dia and you have at least 2m of head.

    cheers, DL

    Hi, thanks for the suggestions.
I should have mentioned it would use a 12v system.

I like the idea of an accessory switch to stop it pumping the tank dry.

Unfortunately I would only have 1/2m head when the tank is full so I need a pump. It does not have to be high pressure just enough to run a tap and a washing machine. I'll start hunting for a diaphragm self priming.

Woo hoo, SWMBO is starting to get interested in the concept and is now talking about putting in a camping hot water system.

I'm happy but think this is quickly going to move beyond my abilities...
