We recently moved into a new house, We are just outside the town water boundary, so we have a large underground tank.
The tank water has a bit of a smell and a color like very weak tea.
We have had the tank cleaned out and was told that the water color and smell is caused by the many trees dropping their foliage etc into the spouting,
the main culprit being a very large shade tree, hanging over the house roof.
We also have a bore which is used for watering the gardens, which has no smell and is very clear.
I rang a water filter mob with the idea of connecting the house to the bore and they told me to first get the water tested.
The toilets are bore connected as well as an outlet to the laundry and kitchen sink.
SWMBO uses the bore for the washing machine, with no problems, so far.
I have sent a sample away for testing but as yet have not got the results.
I have a friend in Melb who is about to sell their house. They have on it a reverse osmosis system, which they have offered me to purchase before they sell the house.
Has anyone here got one or know anything about these? Like always, where possible I like to save a dollar where possible, especially at present both of us being unemployed.
What worries me here though is buying something I know little about, so would normally rely on advice from a company that I would otherwise purchase from.
Dave.
I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

My tank water became a bit smelly this year as well - tried a couple of things but my research lead me to that it may be due to a lack of oxygen in the tank - the cure was circulating of the water - I put a sprinkler head to a hose and put that into the tank and turned the hose on - in effect aerating the water - did this a few couple of hours over a couple of days and the smell went away.
I know nothing about revers osmosis filters, but I do run a sediment and carbon filter from my tank water. You can also get systems with infrared lights to help kill bacteria.
Will be interesting to see what your bore water sample turns up.
