Read between the lines of my first paragraph ... I work with police regularly enough ... I know what's going on but increasing jail rates by ten times does nothing for deterrent ...

I know what the police think Pickles.
I have two friends in Qld Police who both operate in and around Gold Coast/Surfers Paradise precincts.
They are both absolutely fed up to the guts with spending 95% of their times as police officers attending domestic violence and late night drunken violence disorders.
After attending said disorders and risking violent physical threats against themselves , usually resulting in very physical arrests , they then question and charge the perpetrators and eventually detain or release them , awaiting court appearances.
The court appearances can be brief where the magistrate releases them on a soft bond or similar , or it becomes a lengthy case over many sessions , still resulting in lenient judgements.
Each time this occurrs the police officers have to spend massive amounts of time on follow ups , paperwork , and court appearances and in the end the perpetrator gets off lightly.
A huge amount of our highly trained and capable police forces time and effort is just wasted because of the out comes of our courts.
If the courts don't address the issues properly , what is the point of our police force answering these calls , making arrests for no result and totally frustrating the police officers in accomplishing their job.
You can see why they lose their cool and belt hell out of these people sometimes....I would too.

Do you honestly believe that locking up every DVO holder will deter someone who hits their partner? How long do you propose locking them up for? At the end of 2, 5 , 10 whatever you think is fair years what do you do to protect their partner "who put them in the hole?"
Rambling boy what is pathetic is thinking this can be fixed by the legal system and jail.
Mandatory sentencing (what you propose) surely does end up in higher incarceration rates but it does not result in lower crime rates or better outcomes. It might make you feel good but it won't solve any problem you have highlighted...
It might help if everyone was to put their emotions and frustrations to one side for a moment and think about what really works and what doesn't.
I deal with the forces of nature every day at work and I found, long ago, that fighting them is futile. You have to work with them and try to understand how to use them to your advantage.
Human behaviour is really not much more than a force of nature. The more you try to fight it the more it will beat you.
You have to learn what works and what doesn't. Looking at the laws and cultures of all the societies of the world and see which ones have the lowest crime rates and the lowest prison populations might be a good way to start.
I don't think common sense is acceptable in this thread, Billy. ;)
