Our "Justice" System?

Jail (or gaol) is a punishment, but it does not of itself rehabilitate. People only rehabilitate if they want to rehabilitate. If they don't want to change, then it doesn't make any difference if they are locked up or not.
I know a magistrate who tries to persuade people to take the chances he offers them to rehabilitate. Some do, some don't. Those that don't end up in jail. Many of them, upon release, reoffend and end up back before the magistrates. So the cycle continues.
Instead of blaming the courts, let's blame human nature. We are all victims to some extent, but that doesn't excuse us from having to take responsibility for our own actions. Some people appear to be successful in life, but actually they're worthless people whose attitudes and behaviour are contrary to everything most of us would regard as good.
To put it another way, and to be sexist, some of us blokes never learnt how to 'act like men' and it shows in our lives. I get it wrong too, but at least I'm trying to be better.

If that is the case and the ones in jail don't rehabilitate and a large proportion of them re offend and end up back in there, why are we still spending heaps on state of the art jails with all the whiz bang fixtures and fitting when we could house them in tents and go back to the good old days of getting them out there doing jobs like rehabilitating riverbanks with a pick and shovel. That didn't work either apparently but at least we got something back for our taxpayer funds while they were in our care.

Yep Chain Gangs for me too.

Actually I would have them all housed underground digging tunnels. Melbourne for instance as a severe traffic problem and badly needs tunnels for road and rail. Empty the gaols and shove them all underground. Start several tunnels in different directions. Doesn't matter how long they take to dig, just keep digging. Sell the land the gaols presently occupy. Don't want to work? Don't get fed! Upon conviction in court and sentenced to gaol you get three choices. Pick, Shovel, Wheelbarrow. Start diggin boys and girls.
Drug addicts? Down you go. You might struggle for the first few days but eventually you will work off your addiction. Long term unemployed? Can't find a job within six months? Give us two days a week in the tunnel nearest where you live? Refugees? All welcome. Give us your first three years in Australia contributing to our tunnel system. (You get paid of course). After three years here is your citizenship. Thanks for proving your worth.

TBMs do a better job in a tunnel.

I know, we find some place where people already live but aren't like us so we can ignore them.
Then we declare this place part of Australia.
Then we send all the criminals there & it is no longer our problem!

Too much of a generalisation.
True for some types of molesters- especially males who sexually abuse male children. Other types of child abusers- within family, and male adults abusing female children, the rehab programmes are much more successful.

If by "a large proportion" you mean about 35% to 45% then you are correct. And there are programmes to get people out into the community doing useful work (at least in SA) but these are low-risk inmates who rarely take the opportunity to make a break for it. National Parks use prison labour quite a lot, and there is even a CFS unit at Cadell prison who go out to fires. BUt the evidence is that these programmes have little effect upon re-offending rates and that is partly because these are among the lowest-risk offenders anyway. Furthermore there are not enough resources (or rather, too many prisoners) to offer these programmes to very many prisoners.
