    Headlining woes.... - Again !

    Had an interesting day today, taking #1 son's car (holden 'hoonmobile' statesman) for a re-rego inspection.

    As we expected, it was 'failed' on a few little items.... one number-plate lamp out, a rubber exhaust rubber cracked HALF-way through...and... drum-roll... 'sagged headlining'

    - how much sagging ? well, I could'nt see it until it was pointed out... so yes, technically speaking it had delaminated from the decomposing foam inter-layer and therefore the lower surface of the fabric was lower than it would have been when installed...

    About 3 ~ 4cm at the centre of the offending area... behind the sun-roof.

    Talking to an auto Trimmer, we Land Rover owners are NOT unique... heaps of holdens and myriads of Magnas are doing it, to name a few... Prices ranged from $400 to $850 ('got a sun-roof mate, heaps harder to do!' )

    I have my own (uncharitable...) thoughts as to 'why' sagging headlinings are being targeted in WA at the moment...

    Bottom line is... "everyone" seems to be using the same, shrt-lived, nasty rotting foam... turning what used to be an untouched area of a car...into a consumable item, which lends itself to being directed to a specific sub-group of the repair industry for rectification.

    Anyway, apparantly motor cars 'must' have a headlining and generally this makes common sense.
    Exactly what it consists of, foam-backed fabric / OEM style, or no-foam, or even stick-on felts and/or thicker fabrics... is difficult to discover.

    - Does anyone know if this is an ADR? - defining the fabric, I mean... eg, MUST it be OEM or OEM equivalant...- replace a rubbish product with the same or similar garbage... or are we allowed to change it to another TYPE... such as 'felt' ?

    Son is busy with scarper and scrubbing brush... and has been offered around $250 for a Trimmer to re-cover the backing board.

    But since the Lady Sarah is....thinking of letting her lining down in a couple of places... and i've got another spare (non-sunroof) roof/lining, I'm still open to suggestions!

    The family Magna is also, 'technically speaking' unroadworthy...

    I'm looking at 'Montana Felt' propylene stick-on stuff as supplied by Daley's in Welshpool, around $34 per metre, as compared with 'Mustang' foam-fabric at around $35 per metre. (Asked for 'Off the top of your head' prices only, as it was close to 5pm.)

    The lady Sarah, '95 Vogue SE with working EAS, - and 'Respectable' lining...

    Why is a sagging headlining a roadworthy fail?

    I wouldn't think anyone would notice if you retrimed it in anything you like to be honest.

    And what about if the vehicle never came with a headliner - like a series LR? I can't for the life of me see what safety issue this would cause - it's not like it's a structural item.

    Several D2 owners have removed the fabric and painted the headlining.The pics posted look reasonable.I would use a darker colour to match the seats or carpet.The ones Ive seem pics of were painted white.

    Welcome to the world of unbridled irrational capitalism.

    Probably would have gone better (with hindsight) just to pull the whole headlining out before the inspection, but you didn't know.

    Part of the problem is... over here the inspection (registration) used to be exclusively 'government' run, but now is being farmed out to 'Accredited' providers, usually a mechanical workshop/business.
    This is supposed to be more Efficient use of govt. resources etc,- all the usual platitudes.

    Anyway, over here, the Sagging Headlining IS a fail... and an Accredited Examiner told me today that they are (secretly) audited for absolute compliance in every detail.


    Why? Obviously, a low lining is going to obscure your vision, and/or suddenly descend upon and blind / choke /murder... as you drive

    i think it comes under the same heading of a filthy dirty windscreen... the driver/owner will eventually take appropriate action.. eg, .if he has to drive with one hand holding up the sagging tent.



    Edit: - The elephant in the room, IMHO, is the possibility of.... lowering of Integrity regarding the payment(s) for the examinations... $90 for initial one, and $60 -ish for the 'Re-inspection' of the FAILED but now rectified items.

    Be it far from me to suggest that it is in their financial interest to FAIL vehicles for 'anything' possible.... and therefore increase their income by means of a second - and quickie - inspection / signing off... I could imagine that a "technical" failure of said interior lining is... pure gold . . .

    It might interfere with the view of your smart phone, or drip around your ears & eyes!

    I had sagging headlining.
    It was very annoying.
    I can see why it is an issue, especially when it is around your ears.
