My good deed for the day.

I'm down at Lakes Entrance this weekend at Mums. This afternoon we went for a walk along the foreshore at Cunninghame arm. On the way back, we walked along the shop fronts, and as we walked across a side street, I glanced down it to check for traffic - out the corner of my eye I just noticed someone lying down in a car park just off the road.

We went down to see if they were ok, and found an old man lying almost unconscious on the bitumen with blood on his arm - he wasn't very lucid, but he managed to explain he'd been walking home from the RSL and had had 'a few beers'. He had a name badge on and some medals.

Turns out he served in the RAN for quite a while, and was now on his own and was just trying to get home. The bleeding on his arm had stopped but his elbow was a mess and probably broken. We called an Ambulance and made him as comfortable as possible while we waited - there wasn't much to do First Aid wise, just keep an eye on him until the Ambulance arrived.

The Ambulance called, I sat down next to him and had a chat - he was still quite drunk but a lovely old fellow. He wanted me to help him up so he could walk home 'I don't want to be a bother' he said a few times. .

After a few minutes a couple of teenagers saw us and came over - one who was with the Army Cadets and was very helpful and waited around for the Ambulance with us.

Once they Ambo's had checked over him and we had him on a stretcher, we all went our own ways - I thanked the young boys that stopped - they give you hope that not all kids are the same these days, said goodbye to Noel (who really didn't want to put the Ambulance to the trouble of going to the Hospital, but agreed it would be fine if they went for a quick visit) and off we went home for the evening.

No one else came by the whole time, so I really wonder what may have happened if I didn't see him out the corner of my eye.

Mum says she will drop into the Hospital tomorrow as she will be in Bairnsdale anyway and see how he is once the effects of an Anzac Day drinking session has worn off.

I hope the old Soul is fine and makes a good recovery, hopefully next year he will get a Taxi home.

I got home home and cracked my first beer for the day and raised a toast to the old Sea dog.

Thanks for all your kind words. Hoping that Karma looks after me one day if I'm ever in the same boat and need someone to dial 000 on my behalf.

It's not as if you can un see something like this or walk away - how would you live with yourself? Just did what anyone would have done.
