    Landrover theft

News item just now on the radio. It seems that about 0100 today three Landrovers were stolen "from a dealer"in Dubbo, presumably Clancy's, the Landrover dealer (I doubt any other dealer in Dubbo has that many at one time).

Two seem to have been recovered, and a third eluded police in an abandoned pursuit.

You don't need to be fast to outrun the police. You just need to go over the speed limit these days and they call off the pursuit It's given an open reign to anyone that steals cars to always get away with it.

I don't pay a lot of attention to what they have in stock, but I don't remember seeing a Defender in the yard when I passed there on Tuesday. I would think most of the Landrovers in stock would be D4s or RRS. I suspect either would be quite capable of outrunning most of the vehicles available locally to police, even without going offroad.

But as Shane comments, the police are rather sensitive to chases these days - the last one that made the news round here ended up with a stolen car wrapped round a power pole - I think the driver survived but not the passenger. (hit the pole travelling sideways, apparently.

And this sensitivity is somewhat higher when, as is likely, the thieves are pre-teen or barely into their teens, and somewhat dark skinned.

I guess that they will be reassessing their key security at the dealer now. I can't see anyone, no matter how competent, getting away with a modern Landrover without keys. Presumably neatly racked and labelled with the vehicle IDs!

It's a huge issue in our are area at the moment. Kids are stealing cars and burning them up the bush pretty much every night. They are breaking into the houses first to steal the keys.

We live on acerage on the side of town. Last year my wife heard people walking down our gravel drive ( no, I don't know why she was awake to hear it )........... I prefer the direct approach myself.... She rang the police... Me ? I ran outside and jumped in the old Rangie and chased them across the paddock at full song .... Nothing scarier than a V8 on full choke howling out to 5000rpm with a huge bullbar on it heading for you... hurtling at top speed across the paddocks... For some reason they haven't been back. They sure did get through our barb wire fence fast (that must have hurt).

Oh yeah, the police never bothered to turn up .... Some psycho asshole in a loud v8 4 wheel drive hunted for them up and down the bush tracks near our street for an hour though.... That also let all the neighbours know they were around.

I'd be way more worried about psycho assholes in 4wds trying to squish me than I would be about the police maybe arrive sometime ... hours into the future myself.

Like all these people being home invaded or car jacked for luxury cars in Vic. Apex gang or whatever they call themselves. One day they'll jack an unmarked cop car or legitimate sporting shooter on his/her way back from the range. Doesn't take that long if you're a practiced IPSC shooter, to grab gun, mag and unlock glovebox to grab ammo. Probably quicker than they can smash the windows in.

Some people can't be helped by social workers, cuddles or the legal system.

**** 'em if they come at you with bats and are going to beat you regardless.
