Yay just went out and measured the 110 and unloaded it is at 2.05m. The max height for the train leg is 2m. With full fuel, water, camping gear and stores we are set!. Decided if we could take the county then it would be a more ' authentic ' experience ☺

I was there 2 years ago on a flying visit, without a car. For really good value I recommend that you check out Emu Run Tours, especially for a day trip. I went on the West MacDonnell day trip. They list all the places they call into on the Website. Includes lunch, entrance fees etc., and in my case a really friendly and knowledgeable guide, especially as he was a Kiwi!
By the time you take into account fuel, entrance fees and the endless miles of driving, it is a much more relaxing way to go. Also did a local tour to the RFDS and School of the Air, but you can do that in your own car.
A full day at the Motoring Hall of Fame, includes the old Land Rover used looking for Lasserters Reef (sp). A good spot for lunch as well! Cannot remember the name of the place, but on the main road north I think, where the Rock Wallabies come down to eat out of your hand. A must do if you have kids with you.
Alice Springs is a place all Australians should make an effort to visit.
Once you've done everything around the Alice and decide to head south I'd swing off the Stuart Highway as soon as possible.
If you havent been down that way head to Mt Dare then to Dalhousie, Perdika, OOdnadatta,
Algebuckina, then William Ck (lake eyre),William Ck to Maree has lots of ruins worth looking at, Coward Springs and the "bubbler and blanch cup"are must sees and then some really good viewpoints of lake Eyre South.
If you want to see Woomera...it's worth it....and a dam good meal at the Eldo Club as well turn south at Bopeechee and head down the Borefield Rd where you cannot avoid Olympic Dam copper/uranium mine and Roxby Downs.
If you like to explore a little Andamooka Opal Mining Fields are a short detour at this point.
Then its bitumen to Woomera and possibly the Flinders Ranges.
Fuel is available everywhere along with food , beer , ice , water.
I go into this country every year , normally twice and in my opinion the basic route I've given is the best to see a lot of what that country has to offer.
I'm sure others will give some other options.
One of the big "problems" in this area is all the tracks run basically nth-sth and there are no public crossovers , so once a route is taken you are basically on it unless you have time to do big back tracks etc.
If you want to see the Filnders ranges in it's best then you need to continue to Maree from William Ck and go in that way.....but without lots of backtracking you miss Woomera......
How much time do you have for your drive south?
Ean, you are formally invited to visit the sus volunteer at NRTHOF.
