At last look a while back a brand new 160 gb unit, in a box unit was offered for $1200 Aus. I declined to hit the buy button. Apple really put me in a mental bind. So used to what the old classic could do at a very reasonable cost , I now have the choice of smaller capacity ones that I i have heard are tempermental and fragile , loading to the cloud, or an expensive new phone with more spent on additional memory. Decorum prevents me from venting my spleen on the Apple Corp.
What about something like this:

It's not apple but has expandable memory.
Cheers

Could be worth investigating.Of note I have just found that if the pod is connected to the laptop my access to aulro pages ceases. Therefore will run a virus scan while all connected.
Just use an old or outdated I phone.
*If* you have usb input just use a 64Gb memory stick

Atm that looks like the most practical solution. I will just have to decide what to omit so as to bring the file down to that size. Do they have options of playing , ex shuffle or alphabetical order ?
most of todays head units have all the functions of iPods......ive got the largest phone and iPad that apple make.....128gb each......and can store all my music on these two devices which are always with me wherever i go......
i can also use these in the car via bluetooth or aux. cable.......
but i have bought a few cheap 128 gb usb sticks off eBay which i have loaded up and use in the car.......this way the music doesn't stop if the phone rings.....
and can be swapped from car to car......
and of course there is a backup on my computer so i can easily make another copy if one is lost or damaged.......
