    Rough Trip to Tassie

Hope nobody from here had their vehicle on the Spirit from Melbourne to Devonport on Monday night.

Ferry rough night on Spirit of Tasmania leaves trucks, cars smashed
    Cheers .........

The Edjits are planning a Tassie adventure in October. Hope it is a bit calmer then.

That Bass Strait can be a shocker at times. I read that the ocean is very deep further east and west of the strait up to 1500-2000 m deep and then gets much more shallow between Tassie and the mainland - only between 50 and 60m.

When the swell gets up out wider it stands up much more sharply when going through the strait.

    Hi,
If you sleep in the inside cabins you lie along the ship, and are closer to the center of the roll.
It's amazing the weight change as you get lifted up and down.

Terra Firma! The more firmer, the less terror.

    Cheers

There's something to be said for flying over...

Only takes an hour as well - unless there's fog like yet here was the week before last and we spent another hour circling the airport before landing...

My wife and I had a trip between Vladivostok and Japan on a cargo carrier in 2009. The large ship was being tossed around like a tooth pick in a bath tub with a 2 year old. Our accommodation was on the fourth deck up from the main cargo hold. The sea was so rough we had waves crashing over our tiny portal. Our motorcycles got strapped down with three large ratchet style truckie tie downs. One broke from the crazy movement of the boat.
The good news was that all the Russian sailors had so much vodka I don't think they even knew that the sea was rough..
We could not go on the deck or see the horizon because of ice and snow blazing down.. One moment looking up at the sky.. The next all we could see was the sea.
All in all I am not going to be getting on an open water boat any time soon.
