Music - how little I know

    Hello All,

I have always loved music. However, I am challenged by how little I know about it.

One of the songs I have liked since it was first released was Sade's "Smooth Operator".

    Accessed July 16th 2016 from, [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TYv2PhG89A[/ame]

Earlier this morning I independently linked it in my mind to Avalon by Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry

    Accessed July 16th 2016 from, [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpA_5a0miWk[/ame]

Both singers - are the epitome of "smooth", especially Bryan Ferry.

So I did a quick bit of research - via Wikipedia

I found that Sade Adu - the lead singer of Sade has been credited as influencing, "Neo soul"; sophisti-pop style; of soul, pop, smooth jazz, and quiet storm. Yes ... so that led me to finding out what such things as "quiet storm" actually is... a music genre based off Smokey Robinson's like-titled hit single, A Quiet Storm

Accessed July 16th 2016 from, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sade_(singer). This Wikipedia link features hyperlinks to each music style described in the Sade Adu article.

When I looked up the Sophisti-pop reference it did mention the link to Roxy Music - so my musical naivety did manage a pretty good link between Smooth Operator and Avalon. It stated links to Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry's mid-80s albums; Accessed July 16th 2016 from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophisti-pop

While I did not know the terms Sophisti-Pop and New Soul - especially not Quiet Storm; I also do not know what tempo or bars or pace Smooth Operator or Avalon would be known as by a musician? What voice or singing range what would Sade's singing voice in Smooth Operator be classified as? As in the voice range terms such as in between baritone and falsetto. I did mention I was a musical ignorant didn't I?

Oh well I listened to Smokey's Quiet Storm - back for some more musical learning

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Its a bit like this one from the Flying Pickets... Heard the backing Track to the new NAB advert.. Took me hours to work out what song it was..

    Hello JerryD,

Thank you for your post and the two Youtube clips. The Peebles' "Quiet Storm" clips featured Aretha, Gotta Find Me an Angel - another very - very smooth operator is Aretha. Great music to listen to during this spell of inclement weather here in Sunny Queensland

    Hello Sitec,

Thanks for the posting - the Yazoo version is my pick - just something about Alison Moyet's smoky female voice Here is a more mature and slightly less scary looking Alison singing solo Accessed July 16th 2016 from, [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWL3oAkCxe0[/ame]

    Accessed July 16th 2016 from,[ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPpHLK4SHt8[/ame] scary version

Sitec "part of my childhood!" The song was released as Yazoo's first single on 15 March 1982 in the United Kingdom. I had left Year 12 in late 1980. So it was released during my late teens.

    Hello All,

Sitec's inclusion of Yazoo's Only You triggered this song in my mind by Culture Club that was released in 1983. Victims a close match would be Mistake Number Three released in 1984.

    Hello All,

Gee I did not know that a number of songs I have liked since they were released featured Alison Moyet - Invisible [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8CeAHfAD2w&index=12&list=RDGPpHLK4SHt8[/ame].

There was one song that I thought a bloke sang - oops All Cried Out [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wWi6OrgZe4&index=6&list=RDGPpHLK4SHt8[/ame]

There was a period in the mid-1980s when I only had a radio - no TV to see who sang the song ...

Yes both clips were accessed July 16 2016 blah blah. Well back to writing on the tome...

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

    G'day JerryD and Sitec,

Since the first post about Yazoo and Alison M I have played Only You and Nobody's Diary nearly everyday - there is just something about them that just seems to resonate.

Other times I have the songs playing in my head - damn. Land Rovers and Alison M - as if I was not insane enough with just the Land Rovers factor

    Kind Regards
    Lionel
