The joy or not of travel

I think I am lucky, or unlucky as the case may be. Having travelled through mud and rain and freezing cold winds around Longreach, coming across to Townsille and down to Mooloolaba (well almost) I blew the engine in my vw t4 diesel van. Before setting out I had it fully serviced including the timing belt etc and at first glance the engine has lost all compression. The timing belt looks to be intact but it may have jumped somehow. I just hope this is a warranty job. Organising the NRMA to have it road freighted home to Sydney and we will try to get a flight home tomorrow. It could have been worse, it might have let go in the middle of nowhere instead of the sunshine coast. Jim

If you just had the timing belt done, then it might well be a warranty job if it jumped.

I AM HOPING SO. Best case bent valve stems, worst case that plus holed piston crowns. I hate to think of the cost of repairs if not covered.

Thanks to the NRMA. They flew us home yesterday and are having the car brought back for us.

Car at repairers. Not looking good. They were hoping that there was something wrong with the timing belt for my benefit. It would have been covered by their warranty. Belts and pulleys intact so now for rocker cover off. Hoping for something simple but why would I just lose all compression if timing is ok? Sounds expensive

    Is your T4 a 5 cylinder or a 4?

I only know a bit about T5s and they came with 4 and 5 cylinder engines.

A mate who is mad on Kombis doesn't rate the 5 cylinder engines highly at all and recommends to stay away from them. And the Autos too - says they are rubbish!

It seems he speaks the truth!

Hope you get it sorted on insurance/warranty. Those things sound expensive to repair when they go bang

vehicle now at repairers. Timing belt is intact and timing set correctly. Compression test shows no compression on all cylinders. The head is being removed for visual inspection. This has my repairer baffled.

Are you running the original standard air filter, engine may be dusted if there is not much compression, just pulled a Nissan ZD30 that had an aftermarket pod type filter, ran out of compression, full of dust, Regards Frank.
