Costco is it worth the joining fee

    Hi all,
I have a Costco being built sort of near where I reside. It will be the closest of the three..

Does anyone do there weekly/fortnightly shopping there ?

Is it worth the $60 joining fee ?

How does it compare with the other 3 supermarkets ?

    Thanks in advance.

    cheers

When Costco first opened I wanted to have a look, couldn't get in without being a member so paid, I had a look and decided it was not for me and got my membership refunded.
I don't think you should be charged for the privilege to shop, and patronage a shop
Plenty of shops offer membership cards for free and give members incentives.

I was in Costco for a year, got a few interesting items, but none that I really needed,
it worked out the same price as outside if you included the membership price.
Costco has great bargains on some of the Asian food if you by large quantities and also seafood can be cheap if you buy a lot.

I refuse to shop at a place that requires you to pay to get in before you even buy something. Never been in the front door, never will while they run with that policy.

Can you imagine if Bunnings or Woolies did this?

We popped in and browsed around and decided that it wasn't worth it if you didn't have a huge family or were buying for a club.

We didn't originally, but when they opened one just around the corner Mrs Bytemrk took another look...

We easily recoup the membership fee buying specials of stuff like washing powered , dishwasher tablets etc..... stuff you don't use extra of cause you have large quantities...

But the trap is, it's too easy to buy stupid big sized packs of other crap... Far too easy to come out spending heaps more than you planned to.

I use Costco and have for a few years. We more than cover the membership costs in savings on washing machine soap and kitchen paper towels. Shop there about once a quarter not weekly as they do not have all we need. Best value is where you buy product intended for the shop keepers. Other stuff can be slightly cheaper or same as supermarket.

Saved 30% on the price of a Bosch battery powered hedge trimmer which I had price checked. Also their TV and White goods prices are very keen. At least in UK. Stores here do not carry the full USA product range though.

Find someone who has corporate membership and join under them as is cheaper this way.

I reckon that I have probably saved my membership cost in fuel over the last six months or so. Consistently up to 10 cents a litre cheaper than other places.
Tyres are also considerably cheaper if you run Bridgestone or Michelin. I saved $40 a tyre on the RTV ute the last time I got tyres.
I like the items that are not easily available elsewhere such as the Whalen storage shelf Whalen 4 Tier 77" (195cm) Industrial Storage Rack | Costco UK -

I'm less convinced that they are a competitor for the main supermarket chains though, we don't buy many groceries there.
