Almost inevitable for something like this - with the emphasis on a single day for everyone to do it, it provided an opportunity for hackers that would have been just too tempting. And it only takes a single "script kiddie" anywhere in the world. A DDOS attack on an system expected to be close to overload anyway would not take much in the way of resources.

Couldn't get on last night after repeated trys,...will give it another go today.

I am against being forced to answer specific questions for whatever reason. Not just privacy issues, but it is non of their business.
On a side note the census itself is deeply flawed anyway. I tried to answer correctly but it just was not possible. For example I own a farm, rent houses and I am a firie, so I have three jobs. Which is my main job, that I spend most time doing? I honestly dont know! Which is my main income? both the farm and the houses, and if I have a busy year being a firie maybe. I ended up putting the farm which is misleading as it gives the impression that I earn my living mainly from cattle which is just not true. My investments have not even been mentioned, not even a box to tick.
I the questions are so poor added to many people telling fibs on the form I really cant see how much useful information can really be gained. We all lead complicated lives these days, my friend have four jobs for example and they tell me they earn about equal from all of them so what do you write on the census?

I told my wife this would happen, I wasn't going to waist my time filling it out then finding out the site wouldn't work. Told her to get paper copy.:D
There's a big difference between voluntarily choosing to give information and being forced to give information or you will be fined $180 a day.
Plus governments have a lot more power to misuse information, and already do misuse it.
The US Census was hacked last year so assurances about security are not convincing.
Many people withhold or give false information to Facebook or similar sites to protect their privacy.
Good discussion here:
Is the census really 'no worse than Facebook'? - Hack - triple j
According to a January report, Australians are on social media 12.5 hours a day (which was up four hours from the previous year. Four hours!).
12.5 hours A day , some people need to get a life! Probably all on AULRO whilst on the bosses time?:D;);););)
If you put in a 8 hour day, sleep for 8 hours, have food and do personal hygiene, maybe an hour, that leaves 7 hours to do everything else in life.
Do people multi task during sleep?
Everyone trying to get onto one site all at the same time and it got hacked and had to be closed down
