4 door hatch @ $25,000, what would you get?

I've thrown this up here as I tried in other sites and got thrashed by biased viewpoints and got nowhere.

Hopefully I can get some advice with experience.

It's for my wife , on a lease , new car MUST be 4 door hatch.

    Currently has VW Golf

We bought a Mazda 2 Genki demonstrator with 4000 kms on the clock, loaded with extras, for about $22,000 from memory. Wife and I are VERY happy with it - a really excellent car, very high quality. The current 2 is almost as roomy as the previous 3, goes well with the six-speed auto, handles great and is very economical.

Mitsi Lancer, good warranty, fixed price servicing, drives well(I have put them through their paces in the Adelaide Hills), looks good, and when the mrs was involved in a nose to tail collision in a previous one, the car was sandwiched and written off, but she came out without a scratch.

I haven't driven one but the Peugeot 308 1.2T looks pretty good for the price.

If you like your current Golf, there's a couple in the range that sneak in under budget.

I owned a Mazda 3 hatch for quite a few years... Had an SP23. It was a great little car. Never had any major issues, servicing was always reasonable (usually about $200), and it was very nice to be in and drive.

My only gripe was going through so many sets of tyres...

The newer ones have got a little fatter and probably a little slower... But if I was in the market, I'd certainly look at another 3.

Mazda 3. When we were looking for the same thing about a year ago, it topped our wanted list at the time after test driving everything and talking to people who own/have owned them.

Before we bought one, our situation changed and we ended up buying second hand in the end, but 2 people where I work have them and love them. Reliable and cheap to run and maintain.

7 year warranty for something that sort of money has to be hard to go past...

one i test drove had leather and all sorts of goodies and was more than a tad impressed and had them down under 25k no trouble.

One from left field, Mitsubishi ASX,
Diesel AWD are close if you negotiate hard:
2016 Mitsubishi ASX LS XB Cars for sale in VIC - Carsales Mobile
And petrol 2wd are about 4-5k cheaper.
I think they still have a service included package.
