Until a college in this country stops going after $ over education and makes every student irrespective of final undergraduate course study, language, philosophy, basic science, fine art and history before being allowed to specialise as a Dr, Dentist, engineer, IT guru, teacher, nurse etc etc etc etc we will not again have a UNIVERSITY IN Australia

Shouldn't that be the job of High School, to prepare people for University?
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

I agree that secondary schools should be preparing people for university, however it is also the responsibility of a University to provide a universal education, and technical schools to give people skills for employment in 1 field and only that field

    Am I showing my age?
When I was heading to the end of high school the University's had listings of requirements to enter their institution and would publish a specified number of positions for each field of study.

Now it seems if you can pay, you can go to Uni..

And we end up with hundreds of degrees that aren't needed, and hundreds of people in debt...

I agree there Tombie , the unis weren't even interested in processing me as my "scholastic results" did not meet their entry requirements.

Doesn't seem to matter about a students potential these days as long as they have the wear-with-all.

Universities these days are a business.

I've been trying hard to remember back in the High School days, [ I left at 15, back in 1964] if my memory is correct , boys had two streams, Industrial and Academic. Those not destined for Uni. went into the Industrial stream, where they learned skills useful in a trade situation. They still did Academic subjects, but at a lower standard . Each major High School had an Industrial block, where various skills were taught. Tradesmen looking for Apprentices cultivated a relationship with the High Schools, and usually found the people they needed. Those who passed primary school with the high marks in maths etc went into the Academic stream.

Ask a tradesman now days about the standard of apprentices , and you will probably get a negative answer. TAFE Colleges don't seem to be able to produce the same skill set. I'm not sure what the answer is, but we seem to have battalions of highly qualified universally educated people working at the coal front in the mines.

Milton Friedman has a lot of interesting videos on Capitalism. Most are quite long (like an hour) but here's a short one:

That's how it still works here in Qld. There is an OP strand for those heading to uni and a non-OP strand. We send students to woodwork, mechanics, hospitality, building, clothing design and other courses.
It is not exclusive though, you can still cross. For example, one of our former refugee girls, who was doing non-OP because English is her third language, did so well she won a place in accountancy at USQ. Some students go on to TAFE, do well and get credits into uni.
Reality is some teenagers are just not mature enough to apply themselves to serious study and need more time before they can settle down.
