I've seen it argued that fuel tanks should be kept full to prevent algae from growing, but I don't actually do that much myself, so who knows?

Since my son left home nearly 4 yrs ago I think I've used my lawnmower 4 times. Still on the same lot of fuel out of the fuel can that I had when he was mowing my lawn. The mower starts first time if I remove the filter and pour the fuel straight in.

Ah the old debate of how to store fuel is long fought between mechanics and manufacturers. There seems to be a big stigma that that fuel and carby's are a black art and only wizards can fix or even understand how it works.
Also qbond as said above works a treat for those pesky caps as they seem to break a lot nowadays with over tightening. I have seen a few Kawasaki mowers come through and they are very well built from what I've seen with no major issues.
As for unreliable small engines .... You haven't seen unreliable until you have a 50cc ktm. My boy races two at the moment and if you even look at these things the wrong way it won't start haha. They go like a bat out of hell when running though.

. . . And 2-stroke aeroplane engines....
At least a bike / mower engine is not going to kill you when it stops...
(not "IF" it stops...
