Boxhead,
That is no bloody good at all. You do sound like most of our patients though who choose beer/rum as their first course of antibiotics
Hope you heal up and the surgeons are kept away from your foot.
Good luck with the healing

G'day everyone, i want to share little story with to all that would care to read it.
Last Saturday i wanted to have the day with my 8 yo young fella so we thought we would take our boat out for the day on the Maroochy River departing from the Fishermans Rd ramp. We had a great day catching bugger all but still a great day until it came time to put the boat back on the trailer and go home. I had backed the trailer down the ramp to the prescribed depth to the top of the trailer mud guards. I then put the boat into position and went to hook it up and winch up the trailer. As i moved down the ramp to hook it up i have put my foot into a knee deep hole in concrete of the ramp, at the bottom of the hole there was what felt like a pyramid shaped rock. The rock went through the thong i was wearing about 30mm into my left foot. The air turned blue and my son became frightened because he was unaware of what had taken place. To cut to the chase...i had to finish loading the boat on and drive home. Once home, Nursey Wife irrigated the wound and dressed it and advised me that it needs stitches and further looking at, at hospital. I did not accept this advice and thought a couple of beers and the medicine cabinet would fix it. This is wear it starts to spiral out of control... since then i have had 5 days in 2 different hospitals on the Sunny, many bags of drip fed antibiotics, a general anesthetic surgery to remove necrotic tissue and debridement of the foot and a drain installed after all of this as i am at high risk of amputation,as i am a diabetic. I have been sent home in my wifes care with a drip for more IV antibiotics and **** loads of Endone. My wife can administer this as she is a Nurse Practitioner. After all of this, the risk of amputation is a very real one.
If anything is to be learned from this it is 1) Wear the boat shoes that your wife bought for you when using the boat. 2) Listen to your professional wife's sage advice. The i told you so's are just not worth it! 3) Buy some Tiger Balm to place under my nostrils to attempt to block some of the smell of the infection.
At the end of the day if i had of been wearing the boat shoes i would not be in this predicament.
Everyone wear something other than thongs when you are in scuzzy water.
Boxhead.

Very sorry to hear of the recent happenings.
I can sympathize with you. I too am a diabetic, I too go out in boats, I too have suffered a foot injury while handling the boat. I no-longer wear thongs. Instead I go for open-toe sandals or dive boots.
Could you get the details down on paper and forward it all to the local authorities - Council/shire, Marine authority. Also to the local boat club. And the service clubs.
There needs to be some repair work carried out and a warning sign in the interim.
Your mishap needs to be starter for better things to come.
Please see if you can be a help to those who want to use the ramp in the future. A wound as nasty as that can be the impetus for a fix to a serious hazard.
Hope it all heals up. Sorry, ol mate.
Geez, hope to all gets sorted, and a good lesson for all.
I had an infected finger a few yrs back,no obvious entry wound. After 5 days in hospital,on drips, antibiotics, etc, they cut the finger while under a local and cleaned it out.All fixed.
Except my stomach as the antibiotics were that strong they upset the bugs in the stomach and bowl.Once they sorted themselves out,all good.
I didn't wear shoes for years,and when I was a kid,we never wore them.
These days I wear them more often.
Does not need to be a boat ramp, it can happen anywhere you go in bare feet or thongs.
OUCH!!!!
I bought some reef/beach shoes for my recent Exmouth fishing trip.Must admit they were fairly comfy compared to thongs, and I did feel more sure footed.Very important as its very easy for me to set my back off with a minor slip.
Hope that foot comes good soon.

I had septicemia once, and I wax lucky they caught it in time or I wouldn't be here to tell the story. Not nice.
Good luck with your recovery Boxhead. A deep puncture wound is always a potential trap for pathogens to breed up. Swift medical clean out always.
Don.
I had septicemia a while back too. Scary, getting close to touch and go. My symptoms were that I just felt off. Caused by a previous medical procedure.![]()

I go everywhere barefoot. The Mrs hates it and all my mates have a go at me about it. Maybe I should think about upgrading to thongs... I dont like being sick.
I hope you recover fully and quickly! Your lucky to have a trained nurse to care for you... although... if she is like our neighbour she would just say "suck it up princess, I see worse than that at work" lol....![]()
