Thread: Sealing the Outback Way

As usual it will be the 1% of people who are idiots who ruin it for the 99% of other people....

Don't go thinking it's bogans only though, I caught a few Asian tourists throwing rocks at Emu's last year near Carnarvan.... Wth goes through their minds..

The locals will be surprised about CL road... When i was there 8 weeks ago nobody I spoke to thought it was going to happen.

Think about the big picture. There would be many benefits to struggling communities which would gain through the increased tourism activity and the improved transport links. If we are serious about decentralisation in this country then this is the nation-building infrastructure which is needed. Problems like bogans and rubbish are management issues, not reasons to oppose improving a major national route to benefit the whole country, I think.

Having lived & worked in remote areas like Doomadgee in the 90's & 00's when there was no sealed road from here to B&W Roadhouse (about 400k) and living here now that it is all sealed I can tell you which I prefer!

Yes, we still get cut off every Wet but it is for weeks now - not Months!
This save the people & businesses out here a lot of $$$.

Even when the road was all dirt you still got the Idiot Fringe, they still did their stupid drawings, left their rubbish got bogged & expected you or someone to help, they still did all the Silly Bugger things.
With a sealed road they don't manage to get bogged near as much.

So weather or not the road is sealed you will have the idiots but, if it is sealed at least the locals can still drive out after a few mil of rain, you car does not wreak itself continually & you are not eating 5 month old food by the end of the WET.

Must admit since most of the main roads around here are mainly seal now it has taken some of the adventure out of living & moving about around here, it has also taken out a lot of the risk & drama.

ah yes.....it'd be great to be able to easily drive from Brisbane to Birdsville on bitumen or across to Innamincka and all the way down to Marree and catch up to old friends without being stopped by road closures.

In fact you'll be able to do a serious bush drive from Brisbane to Adelaide on inland roads without having to drive the bloody Newell and Barrier Highways.

Definitely a need for a good road right across the centre, to avoid big detours.

I see that sealing the road to Weipa in the next few years is expected to double the number of visitors, according to this report. There could be a similar benefit from sealing the Outback Way.

Why is flying to Weipa not cheaper than Bali?
