As a cyclist who races offroad and rides a lot on road - unless I am riding along at less than 10kmh and on a footpath (which I know is illegal) I will have my helmet on. Why? Because I have been witness to soo many crashes and seen enough to k ow that they save lives. Even at 15kmh.

Just recently I had a mate who was riding through a green light and back onto a bike path at sub 15kmh. Got hit by a car running a red, spent months on hospital with a broken neck and will be back up on the bike mid next year (the accident happened about 6 months ago). Dead without the helmet through no fault of his own. Has 3 kids.

Free to do your own thing, but I support the mandatory helmet rules.

I respect your thoughts on this , but why are there only two countries in the world with mandatory laws ? Have these laws increased or decreased bicycle usage ?

    Appreciate your comments Joe.

That was one of the big arguments though - neck injuries are increased from the bike helmets..

What gets me the most is perception..

The average bike rider around here sits on 30-40km/h in Lycra and a small foam hat..
On the downhill run to the plant they crack over 65-75km/h and the pelotons pace along close to 60km/h regularly..

Yet... I hop on my Motorbike, remain in the 40-60km/h areas, in Sneaker, Shorts and T-shirt and full helmet and I'm being "risky"...

All perception... and statistically the data presented above on bike helmets is very restricted..

The majority of serious injuries I've seen on bikes (motor and treadly) occurred at low speeds and usually resulted in cuts and abrasions or broken bones...

If we're going to be serious and mandate this way then why not change the face of riding..

Armoured jackets, knees, thighs, full gloves, closed face helmets... for any Bike - motorised or pedal...

More time lost to broken collarbones, wrists etc than head injuries.

Some pseudo token effort with a helmet which couldn't even hope to pass an AS impact test is hardly the answer...
