My parents are scoping a holiday in Canada next year at the moment. So far have booked a train from Vancouver not sure where to but is scenic ride through mountains for a few days. Then fly to Toronto before on to UK and a Baltic cruise.

Not sure if it is where they are looking however are finding it difficult to locate affordable accommodation. My parents are backpackers in travel style and age has not altered this habit.

Keep being told USA are all going north for holidays in unprecedented numbers which is soaking up accommodation and putting up price on what is left.

Might be worth checking out accommodation in areas of interest to you now so can gauge availability and price.

Thanks for the thought, although I'm more turn up and make it happen kinda person, necessity provides the means. Aslong as I can organise a vehicle and insurance, a list of things the old boy wishes to see, that would be about the level of planning I'd be happy with, just get there and roll on, doubt I'd even have a return flight booked

Good luck getting into Canada without a return flight booked. Canadians are friendly but Candian border security officers are known to be some of the toughest in the world.

When we drove a 110 across the border we got a huge grilling in individual rooms, possibly because Dave had previously lived and worked in Canada and they thought he may be at risk of overstaying.
Others got off worse. Some poor bugger had his car dismantled (seats and interior all stripped out). They then left him to put the car back together himself.

Also don't forget there are plenty of parts of Canada where you will freeze to death overnight if you can't find proper accommodation. So if you want to travel in the "non tourist" season there is a good chance you will be experiencing a lot of sub zero nights in many places.

Also a survey found 20% of Americans would consider moving to Canada if Trump becomes President so if the wrong result happens the place may be crowded with American refugees!

Local knowledge is quickly gained, I was reasonably prepped for heading to russia, in the arctic circle, in regards of what to be wary, canada should be a lot easier without a language barrier

I have a customer who is an expat Canadian, he tells me every one seems to just go to Vancouver and Toronto but very few go and know of the beautiful areas of the east coast like Brunswick. He says there are very nice things to do and see on the east cost.
He also told me about the mouth watering $1.99 CAD lobsters! there in the fishing villages.
He also said Rape and black on black crime is pretty non existent in Canada.

On the east coast of the US we were eating lobster rolls (real lobster meat) from Maccas.
We were staying with friends in Maine, and along the roadside you could buy live fresh lobster from the locals for $5.00 per pound - this was close to 15 years ago though. I bought a couple extra for the friends we were staying with and her response was " are you sure, they are a bit expensive"
