It seems like they have a "political" crackdown for media brownie points every few years. I have a lot of people on disability pensions coming through at work. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the process, the most deserving people are hounded relentlessly while the malingerers go through with the minimum of fuss it seems. There was an older lady that should have on disability from a major accident in her 20s worked in the mines for years just chewing painkillers, very stoic and independent. She can't walk and had to go to plead her case on far too many occasions, this consisted of paying for a taxi to the ferry terminal, getting the ferry to the mainland, aprox 30 mins to "walk" the 200m from the ferry to the bus.... You get the picture, some days she would be asked to come back the following day because of their own mismanagement, other days she would be lectured by an early twenties girl on show she was lazy for not upskilling by enrolling in an IT course. It really ****ed me off as she was 6months away from legitimate aged pension and would have easily qualified for disability for over 40 years but couldn't sit still. Then on the other hand there are endless that I have seen people that are on the pension for no other reason than knowing what to say at the appropriate time.
There must be a common sense screening that they could easily adopt if they had the real will to do so, not the usual token haphazard crackdown when someone needs some political currency.

From my experience, this is because the malingerers spend a lot of time learning the rules, getting to know their rights, know the correct processes, what to say and so on, and so have fewer dramas, while those often more deserving, who are used to being self-reliant and find themselves needing help, often assume that the system will do the right thing to help them out when it's actually quite the opposite.

I told Deb to tell Centerlink I kicked you out and you are living/doing numbers under the Williams River bridge to survive.
We have no dependant kids so they wont be hounding me for payment.

You know the old joke don't you Andy?
    Wife turns up with $150.20.
Hubby "Which one gave you the 20c?"
    Wife "All of them."
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

I think that's the kind of work ethic centerlink would be happy with.

Was just reading in this mornings paper Centerlink are giving all pension earners a Christmas present. They say 313000 will get a pension cut,88500 will loose their pension.
They are lowering the assets test values.

I am assuming the two are related? That is, people are losing pension because the gov is lowering the assets test value?

If that's the case, then maybe it could be argued that if you've retired with a house worth a lot of money, then you should be using your fortunate position to fund your retirement, not using the pension so you can hang on to the big house and give your kids a bigger inheritance.
