Thread: Discovery Series 2, TYRES need help!

I have Goodride Radial A/T SL369 tyres on a series 111 Land Rover. They have coped with the job so far. They meet all of the legal requirements. Can't comment on longevity. The Discovery is a much heavier vehicle than a series 111 and capable of a much higher road speed so it might wear them quicker than the series 111. They have a decent amount of thread but are not overly aggressive. Also the thread is not as open blocked as some so you always have a fair amount of rubber on the road when it rains. That's a consideration over here. Anyway it's a decent enough tyre for the money. You can spend a lot more and get a more modern type tyre but I have no complaints. Mine ....mainly road use, both wet and dry (and wet....). Have towed a 6x4 trailer with cribs (i.e raised sides) loaded with turf (peat) up wet grassy slopes with no wheel spin. Have also been in the mucky stuff and all went well. Might not be Camel trophy spec but but you could afford a second spare if you wanted. Anyway they carry all the relevant legal info on the sides including a manufacturing date.

High wear and low cost = least safe.

Never skimp on tyres or brakes...

huh? how about somewhere around 90,000km on a set of five?

the bridgestone 694's let go on a wet roundabout before the Khumos did.

I run Pirelli scorpions. Currently on about 60k and they're pretty well dead but otherwise they're fantastic.
Dueler 697s are another good option, as are Goodyear duratracs.

Believe it or not I actually had a set... fairly decent grip but only lasted 50k, and got punctures galore! Garbage tyres. But they were soft and rode nicely, I'll give them that. Literally polar opposites to the coopers that came afterwards. If you got 90k from them, I suggest you change tyres more often.

Depends on intended use. I am a big fan of Maxis Bravo 751 but they are not aggressive Offroad... Very similar to the original XPC by Michelin. The General Grabber AT2 are a tried and tested great tyre. More aggressive than 751. Both are available in Light Truck configuration in 245/75/16 which is my preferred size. The previous scorpion AT was a nice tyre but they went for a more mild pattern in the current range...

For my next set I will go more aggressive and probably a Dynapro MT or Duratrac in LT.
