    Seat Belts Offroad

Tragic case but a good reminder that seat belts are just as important offroad.

Boy, 5, 'shaken' after father, grandfather and real estate agent killed in crash near Scone - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Many, many times I have seen people not wearing seat belts offroad, or even claiming it is safer not to wear them.

So far it looks like the boy who survived was the only one of the 4 wearing a seat belt.

Very important. I know of two blokes who were killed in separate rollovers by not wearing safety belts, presumably because they were on private land and therefore not forced to by law.

Essential. I walked away from a roll over on ANZAC weekend. Seat belt and side airbags on the D3 saved me. Unfortunately the car didn't survive.

There can be problems with inertia reel seat belts. At a angle or incline they can some times jam. This could be potentially in some situations a health hazard. My brother fitted a lap belt for when he is driving on harder terrain. He also has the normal inertia reel seat belt for general use.

I thought belt systems in modern cars had system that pulled in the belts when the airbags fired - certainly as early as 98 in my Freelander there were warnings about not playing with the belts and to "disarm" them before maintenance.

In older syatems as you mention they do lock but they lock in the tight position to prevent the belt loosening in tilted positions.

Why is that a potential hazard?

The only time it has been a problem is if leaving the vehicle on a steep slope, say to sort out why progress is not progressing, and then get back in, go to put belt on and inertia thingy kicks in.
