    Centrlink!

Our son Brendon is studying at uni in Japan, the first semester he got his youth allowance. this semester they cut him off and said he is out of the country so not entitled to it. We had to stuff around and convince them he is studying overseas at a campus approved by his Aussie uni and is entitled to to like the previous semester which they paid him for and nothing has changed. He only came back here for the uni break and then returned.
A red flag was raised when he departed Oz. ( Data matching ).
So after weeks of sending documents and phone calls it's all sorted out and the reinstated his payment and back paid him.
But after all the mucking around they now pay him even more money as he is overseas and gets and overseas allowance!

We questioned Centrelink on this and then asked why did he not get this extra overseas allowance last semester.

They said some one had keyed in the wrong Code on his file and it was missed!

So he was actually entitled to that last semester so Centrelink had put in an appeal for us for Brendon to get back paid for last semester, this process of appeal will take some time.

So when you owe Centrelink money they want it back straight away , but when they stuffed up you have to wait.
So you are really at their mercy for staff to process your application correctly, because even if they make an error you have to go through a lot to get it rectified and you got to reply on their staff to be proficient in knowing everything you are entitled to.

I wonder how many people miss out on stuff because they are unaware of their entitlements

My mother just went through this with her pension. They cut it off entirely and when she inquired as to why after a lot of back and forth and stuffing about they admitted it was an error on their part.
Now she has it re-instated but is getting more than previously!

Yep - my tax return from last year got snaffled by Centerlink to pay a supposed outstanding debt - thing is I have never had any dealing with Centrelink in my life for any purpose - I rang them and they had never heard of me but still took my tax return - I rang the tax office - not their problem - centrelink needs to sort - centrelink says it is a tax problem not their problem.

I asked the Tax Office if they check these things before stealing my tax return and no - there was a debt on my tax file number so it is paid automatically.

I threatened legal action to recover the money but they are used to that and basically said bring it on - they could not understand that a person would never had any dealings with Centrelink for their entire life.

To cut a very very long story short - I found out that the Centre Link accounting system had a brain fart and attached my TFN to someones debt - mentioned this to the Tax office and they said I would have to recover my money from Centrelink who said they could not do anything as I was not in their system despite them having my money.

Dummy spit and a formal complaint to tax office - then spoke to someone reasonable and a month later finally got my tax return.

The Centrelink system sucks big time (thankfully I will probably never have to deal with them in my life) but their links to other agencies causes problems all across the Government sector.

and yet, they do some amazing things.

a woman in my local chemist noticed I had a DVA pension and suggested I could be entitled to a lot of refunds over a period of several years.

she spoke to the chemist and they were sure it was correct.

so they printed out several hundred copies of receipts from previous transactions , gave them to me and said I need to take them to Centrelink and request the refunds available.

to my astonishment they went through the receipts and suggested there may be more archived and to take a seat while they searched.

they found more and added them to my claim and happily printed an authorization to go ahead.

a couple of weeks later I got cheque from them for a substantial amount

    shocked and stunned I was.......

Not only Centrelink but Tax office today.
I pay my GST quarterly and the June quarter co incided with group certificate time, so /i place groiup certificate in with the BAS statement.
I paid my GST installment before the due date also.
Then I get a letter not long after stating I had not submitted an activity statement. I rang the ATO. I askeed them what the problem was I told them I have paid and they had recieved the money before the due date and had to tell them what day my bank processed the funds to them.
They agreed they got the money but the activity statement was missing. They seemed to have got the group certificate info ok , but in THEIR system have lost the BAS statement. Not to worry the lady told me, they will send me out another BAS statement form to fill out. She said she would make a note about this also.
So the BAS form came and I filled it out and returned it as requested.
Today I get a letter from the ATO saying WARNING FAILURE TO LOG ACTIVITY STATEMENT ON TIME, the commissioner has decided not to issue a penalty at this time and a fine of $180 per 28 days or part there of for every 28 days it is overdue to a max of $900 for small to meduim businesses and more for larger if you don't provide the BAS on time

Crikey, I did nothing wrong in the first place.

Yes some of us are old fashioned, and besides the $1 stamp is tax deductable. It helps keep my fishing buddy who is a postie in a job.
Bee-utey, I just tried the elctronic thingo, downloaded the Aus Key, then did the mygov registration thingo. Then tried the ATO business portal which took me to mygov.
The auskey won't show up, the mygov thingo wants linking to the ATO so I went through the process. Then it asks for some verification, ok i put in my tax assement details as asked, ok on that, then bank acc details and it refuses to accept that, tried the super thing, and only have one attempt left!.
Those $1 stamps are looking a lot less stressful
    Cheers , Mario

Yep the linking thing is a problem - like you it would not recognise accounts etc that tax already knew about but I tried a couple of times and finally it worked - I think that there are clinches in the system that computer nerds but in there to test us.
