Take Vincent's with confidence for quick three-way relief

I was looking through my first aid kit which I carried in my glove box, for a while. In it I found a packet of Vincent's that contains 20% phenacetin. According to wiki, at some time before 1972 Vincent Chemical Co. replaced the phenacetin in the formulation of its powders and tablets with salicylamide

A beer and a Bex anyone?

Brings back memories of other patent nostrums such as APC powders.... 'Aspirin, phenaticin and caffeine' (?)

Anyone remember BEX, along with the advice of taking one with a cuppa and having "...a good lie-down".

I remember the local barber at the little place I grew up in would regularly have a Bex & Coke (the soft drink) I can still remember the look on his face as he folded the paper in to a V pattern to slide the contents down his throat.

I've got a little glass medicine cabinet that I rescued from a load of rubbish heading for the tip. One of the bottles in it is a similar concoction to laudanum.

Bought singularly, Vincents cost 3d, compared to Bex which cost 1d.
What would that Vincents be worth today and would you be considered a drug dealer if you sold it?
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

A good party trick was to roll the Vincent APC paper into a tube and blow the powder into the air and lite it up with a match or lighter , it blew out a big highly combustible flame about 3 ft long ( "Done with great care of course" ) . I showed this trick to my Mother in Law and she never took another Vincent ever again .

Yep - we used to undergo regular searches of our belongings at one boarding school I attended to make sure that we had no Vincents (or Bex) in our possession after certain people were caught igniting Vincents powders in the classrooms.

Of course - I would never have been involved in such antics ...................

On a slightly related note, I found about 8 glass phials, or ampoules, of morphine on the western head of the Jardine River one time. They looked old.
Didn't bring them home as I had to come home through Cairns airport and I didn't think they'd like to see them.

Remember visiting my 'auntie' Pat in hospital when I was a kid sometime in the 60s. Renal failure followed by death due to too much 'help' from Dr Vincent.
