    NRMA and towing.

Today rang nrma to renew classic membership, then was informed it doesn't cover any vehicle with a gvm over 2.5t for towing!
Now having been a member for over 20 years and owning 4wds that would all exceed that figure , it was a bit of a shock being told that we had to pay almost double to get premium membership to cover the gvm and that it had been that way supposedly for years! This was a revelation as my defender was towed about 6 months ago after an ecu issue!
It buried on page 12 of the terms and conditions, the main page only says "over 2.5t" nothing about gvm.
This mean almost all Landrovers except Freelander and evoke are not covered under classic care! Along with all dual cab Utes , and all medium and full size 4wds from challenger / Pajero/ fortunes and prado to patrol and cruiser, will all not be covered!
    Cover page no gvm mentioned:

Yep - been like that for years - a rouse to get people with a normal sized 4wd to take out Premium Cover.

The majority of insurance based road service like Allianz that comes with some policies id 3500kg.

If you dont have insurance based standard coverage - you really have no option to pay for classic and take your chances that the NRMA tow guy does not know what you weigh or pay for Premium cover - I dont think that in NSW there are any other stand alone road service providers.

When I was locked out of my D3, I was told by RACQ that I would have to pay for the recovery as the front wheels weren't straight as I couldn't open it. I decided to break a window instead.

Pretty sure my Defender weighs less than 2.5 tonnes.
GVM includes the driver and passengers. However, when towed, no people would be in the vehicle because of safety rules, so their weight should not be counted.

That is why we have RACQ--Ultimate,which covers all our vehicles, and any vehicle that I am driving, makes it worth the extra cost.

    cheers

Sorry if I misunderstood your reference to towing. Were you referring to:

GVM when being towed by the NRMA
GVM when you are towing a van or trailer

Yes, I got Ultimate cover too in case of remote area problems. It also covers a van or trailer being towed. I must look up the fine print on GVM.

EDIT: The RACQ Ultimate fine print says:

    Vehicle Weight Limits

Limited Services apply for vehicles where the weight of the Nominated Vehicle exceeds 3.0 tonnes GVM loaded or unloaded and/or where the length exceeds 5.5 metres (18 feet) in length and 2.3 metres (7.5 feet) in width or 2.0 metres in height. Services are limited as follows:

    • No towing entitlement. RACQ will endeavour to arrange towing subject to availability of a tow truck, this will be at the members expense.

I notice it also covers the Jardine, Daintree and Bloomfield Rivers, but the driver has to pay any ferry charges.

NRMA refer to your gvm. Regardless of actual weight! This is in relation to them towing your vehicle.
So a defender 110 is about 2050kg and It's gvm is 3050 so according to NRMA it's not covered by classic, even a defender 90 isn't covered!
Ditto my wife's multivan, it's about 2100 naked and a 850kg load so almost 3t GVM.

? Batteries cannot be serviced or fitted to motor homes where there is limited access to the battery or substantial removal of vehicle panels is required
? Jump starts may be provided, up to 24-volt boost start only, providing only one battery is unserviceable
? Lockout assistance may be limited for some light commercial vehicles
? Wheel changing assistance may be provided if the vehicle's jack and wheel nut spanner are provided. Where the weight of the wheel and tyre assembly is beyond the safe lifting capacity of a single person, a service fee for additional assistance may be charged.

Note: The decision as to whether services can be provided will be at the discretion of the RACQ consultant or the attending RACQ representative.

For the cost of Premium Care it's well worth it.

Last year I got a tow from Kings Canyon to Yulara, they paid for 4 nights accommodation at Yulara while my Disco was fixed (they offered to put me up in a holiday unit but I was happy to camp), and gave me a hire car for the duration. The cost of all this was covered by the Premium Care membership.

While I was at Kings Canyon another guy was trying to arrange a tow for his Land Cruiser as the cover he had only covered 20km. He was looking at over $800 just for the tow to Alice. He would probably also been up for his own accommodation and other costs once he'd been towed to wherever.

So, for the extra cost I'd say it's well worth it.
