So today I thought that I may go and by a nice new Rhino Rack for the Defender, after all I deserve it. About 1/3 of a tank of Diesel in the truck and I see diesel for a good price so why not fill her up.
Over toward the Diesel sign and yep it's on both sides of the bowser but there a bloody big landcruiser at the front bowser which hangs back over toward the rear console. No problem I'll just grab the nozzle and fully extend the hose to the filler.
Yep great and off I go to order that rack when she spits, farts and bunny hops, HMMM? I curse+++ dirty diesel! Stop the vehicle and long story short I'm waiting for a tow truck when I think to myself am I positive I filled with diesel?
Well I didn't and it turns out 98 octane won't cut it (who would have thought)
Heart sinks, I feel like the village idiot and start thinking $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I call LR service centre and am told to contact my insurer and what do you know I'm covered for my mistake. PHEWWWWWWWWWW
Now i'm driving a new disco sport loaner...Roof Racks are costly and stressful
Ouch. You're not the first to do that if that's if any comfort. At least your insurance will sort it - it would have been very costly had they not.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
I've done it.........in my own little world although I should have wished up because the fuel card was rejected (diesel only) was in a rush and paid cash.
It was in my hi-lux, drove 20km after putting 60L in a 72L tank....it would re-start. Toyota just drained, flushed, new filters and she fired up......will see what happens long term.
The number of people that do that at the Roadhouse I run would surprize you.
Not the locals but contractors, tourists & visitors.
Must admit our pumps can be a bit confusing because we have 2 pumps with 1 side diesel & the other opal on both pumps.
Because of the number of times it happens I have done up A4 signs that are stuck to the pumps, nobody seemed to check the writing at the top of the pumps.
Just to confuse them further 1 of the 2 pumps is pre-paid only so we have to go out & tell folks that we can't use that pump until they pay.
I spend half of tourist season running out to tell people that they are either trying to put opal in a diesel car or that they have to go to the other pump to fill up.

You are lucky - most insurance companies will cover you for contaminated fuel but not putting in the wrong sort of fuel.

I managed to do it in the D4 after a long day trip up and back to Sydney.
Was 1/2 way through filling the long range tank at the local BP when it dawned on me.. " why is the handle green and not black!"
Lucky for me I'd only filled the extra tank and not the main one... so I drove it home and drained out 75 Litres of Diesel/Unleaded shandy
I was ****ed off about the $70 odd dollars..... but it could have been far far worse.

I loaned my Merc diesel 4WD to a friend (my 1st mistake),
and they decided to be kind and refill the tank. Knowing nothing about diesel cars they went to the truck bowsers at a highway servo (their 1st mistake),
and started to refuel the car from the Ad-Blue bowser (their 2nd mistake), then after adding about half a tank they realised they had stuffed up and decided to move the car to the non-truck bowsers (their 3rd mistake).
When I got the call from them that it had died and wouldn't start again, I managed to avoid threatening lethal consequences (maybe my 2nd mistake!)
It ended up costing them about $3k to rectify.
