Series 2a swb with 2.25 petrol, fairey O/D.You can't not love the simplicity of a series, they have no extra parts added, every nut and bolt has a job and no more. Check
Discovery 1 3.9 V8 auto, drove one as a LR test driver at 4wd shows, decided I would own one one day.Just a nice relaxed highway cruiser and easy to drive everyday taxi. Check
Discovery 1 Tdi auto,IMHO the best Discovery and would be happy to drive and travel across Oz in one for the rest of my driving days. The best compromise between size, carrying ability, towing ability, running costs and passenger seating and ease of driving.Buying one if the defender gets written off.
L322 Td6.What can you say?,best 4wd wagon ever sold in Oz IMHO.How LR made a vehicle so small on the outside but with so much interior space TARDIS style is beyond me.The hardest thing I found with mine was staying under the speed limit and not falling asleep while driving, the A/C would keep a pack of penguins happy on a 45 degree Pilbara day and it'll still return 9lt/100.I'd even put up with GM's shoddy auto the rest of it is so good. Check.
Defender Tdi,bought mine new September 1998 and she sits in my driveway as I type this. What can I say,did 65,000kms in it's first year driving around Oz,picked up my beautiful wife Tracey and new born son Declan and my daughter Keeley from hospital in it,watched both kids grow up in it,Declan threw up in it the first week he started school, justifying the hose out interior. She has 499,349km's on it,starts first hit of the key, gets me to Uni every week, rifle club every weekend and returns 10ltres per 100 and doesn't ever need fluid top ups or ever leaves me stranded, what more can I say, enough said. Check
L405 RR,The next generation in vehicles, modern everything, engine, gearbox, materials, production techniques, class act all round.Stick your Landloosers,if I wanted an expensive modern made vehicle that's nothing more than a 30 year old boiler with extra bling added I'd ditch the bling, pocket the cash and buy a D1. Not yet.
Honorable mentions,TDCi defender.Never has a defender caused so much distention in the ranks, the best of the model for me.Regarding defenders it is the best all round, excellent engine, very tractable, reliable except for the Toybota bits, gearbox is better than previous servings by far, better handling by far, nicer interior, good A/C.Mines done more of remote outback Oz than most try hard Jap numbers combined, very accomplished vehicle, like all vehicles,ALL vehicles it needs a couple of things upgraded to make 100% but if you want to go remote and come home again it's the model you want. Check.
    That'll do me. Pat

    No one lusts for a 101 ?
a open Perenti, just for those summer beach days
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
    apologies to Socrates

101 - absolutely, but I'd need to do a couple of mods to make it a daily driver - AJ uses his as a daily driver, as does the guy with the matt black Td5 powered unit who's name escapes me. Both have PAS, and the Td5 is a good match for it, but a lot of work to install by all accounts.

Power steering and disk brakes would be a must, but that would be about it for me, I love everything else about mine. . Maybe a Diesel engine of some description which is still a definite maybe on mine too at some stage.

    Perentie is a definite.

    86 RRC - already have.

L322 - would make the top 5 easily, but I'd want a newer one than what I had.

    D4 - absolutely.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
