A friends elderly aunty who died about fifteen years ago had suffered dementia from her early fifties and an autopsy revealed high levels of lead in her brain. Her parents owned a service station and from a young age she worked there serving fuel and consequently in later years she and husband took over the business. When filling the fuel tanks of cars she always known to have her head down near the outlet listening to see if the tank was full. No doubt she was also working in an area where she was exposed to a large amount of exhaust fumes on a daily basis.
Cheers, Mick.

Ha Ha. Jeez Brian you have a good memory. No lead damaged brain cells there.
Thats one reason my wife said to get a brain scan . I seem to be forgetting a lot of stuff these days. As in I cant find my way back to a street address I visited a couple of weeks before without a memory jog.
Some of the other Ringers back then used to work at the mine as well and alternate with station work for a change.

I am getting a bit paranoid now.
Interesting article.

I recently watched a show on tele and it was about dementia and how the effects of intermittent fasting can stimulate brain cell growth/reproduction and reduce the chances/progression of dementia. It was a very interesting and informative show. It was a BBC documentary compared by Michael Mosely.

Lots of environmental and lifestyle factors have been linked to dementia.
E.g.
Diesel exhaust
Fatty food
Excess consumption of fish oil tablets
Excess red meat protein
One of the reasons given for the change to unleaded fuel in the 80s was the rising incidents of blood lead levels in cities, in particular in Sydney and Melbourne as it was assumed lead in fuel was the reason.
After unleaded fuel was introduced testing continued and to everyone's surprise blood levels continued to rise against all predictions. On investigation (maybe they should have done this first) they found that climatic conditions and prevailing winds means that any lead from car exhausts leave the city areas and are not a contributing factor - the reason was the new found passion for renovating and the lead in the paints being removed and lead in older toys that kids may be sucking on.
Now removing lead from fuel is a good thing but it was done on the basis of wrong information in the 80s - so mask up when doing your renos at home.
