Not quite the case. They will issue with an infringement notice for $75.

How do I know - I received one a while back. It quoted my registration number (but NOT the make / model of the vehicle) and time / date / location of the alleged offence in Perth.

Funny thing was that I was nowhere near Perth on the date quoted - I was at home in Kalgoorlie.

So I sent them back their "infringement notice" with a rather impolite note requesting evidence in support of the allegation made, together with detailed instructions on where they could stick their "infringement notice" in the absence of any requested evidence. Never heard back from them.

I wonder if what you received was a genuine infringement notice or just a scam trying to con you out of $75.

A couple of years ago, I received an email claiming I had been caught by a speed camera. Since I was in Tasmania at the time the offence was allegedly committed in NSW, I just ignored it. I can't remember how much detail it had about my vehicle.

Return postal address was certainly legit (I checked it on their web page). There were also the usual options available for "payment" which all appeared legit to me. There was a Perth telephone number given on the document, which I never bothered to call.

Should still have a copy of the "infringement notice" (I scanned it before returning the original) around here somewhere - I'll see if I can find it.

    Good on you JC.

I heard a story of a cyclist who saw someone throw a cigarette butt out their window. So the cyclist rode up, picked up the butt and knocked on the window. When they wound it down the cyclist said "sorry, you dropped something" before flicking the still alight cigarette into the car. Wish i could have seen it.

During the 2000 Sydney Olympics I was a volunteer driver and wore the uniform.

On two occasions, not while driving but walking along the city footpath, I observed people dropping litter. Fortunately I was close enough to quickly tap them on the shoulder and tell them that they had dropped something and if they didn't want it then they would find a garbage bin somewhere soon. In both cases they picked up what they had dropped and I followed them until they found a bin.

Maybe it was the uniform (probably looked official) or the other people that observed what had happened or just the friendly/polite way I spoke to them but it all worked out without a problem.
