Has anyone seen anything about PLATOONING TRUCKS.
I saw a short doco on it on paytv and did a little research and found quite a bit about it.
While initially intended for convoying trucks, the system could be very good for other road users, particularly those towing caravans.
Basically the system works in a way that when you come up behind another vehicle, at present, another semi, also equipped with PLATOONING technology, the rear vehicle can wirelessly link up to the foreword facing camera in the lead vehicle and the rear vehicle can then see the road ahead as well.
But the system also has builtin collision avoidance as well, where if the front vehicle goes for the brakes, the rear vehicle's brakes are automatically applied at the same time.
There is a lot more to this system but thats the basics and I think this would be a huge step foreword in road safety.

I think this is like the convoying systems which various companies including LR are trialling so rows of vehicles can talk to each other, but I don't have a link.

I wouldn't want to be the barina between 2 road trains.
Instant pancake.

And the human race will become less spatially aware, less able to deal with crisis situations and less socially responsible as a result.
Bit like the cars that drive themselves until there is a crisis and the driver has to take over and make some serious spatial decisions in a millisecond. In the future this could happen to a young 'driver' who has never actually controlled a car, apart from saying 'go there'.

Already happening in the aviation industry.....
It would need a change in the law to happen in OZ as convoys are prohibited for AFAIK safety reasons.
It would be interesting trying to overtake a band of grey nomads or for that matter a convoy of road trains on the Stuart Highway. If the front grey nomad sees a car wanting to overtake in his screen with a camera on the last vehicle the results could be spectacular if he pulled off the road.
What would the truckies do to while away the time if they cannot have drag races up the hills like they do now.

I wonder what would happen if someone should sneak in between one of the vehicles in the convoy(?).
Leeanne has a new Ford Kuga Titanium. It has all the bells and whistles including adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance systems. The adaptive cruise is awesome, it just sits behind the car in front, goes up and down in speed as it needs,,,, very relaxing really,, however,,
On our way to work one morning, (well, several mornings now), in peak hour traffic,(not on cruise), people sneak/push in, next thing we're almost through the front window under "full" brakes. If the person behind us wasn't on the ball, he'd have cleaned us up.![]()
I guess most truckies know exactly what you mean.
I once saw a clip of how a convoy of mining trucks could be linked together in single file so the whole column followed the front one and copied its movements. Very impressive, but bad news for those drivers made redundant by computerization.
