Thread: Do fewer young people want driving licences?

A mate of mine has a son with no interest in learning to drive , being in a semi rural area public transport isn't much of an option. Yet he gets about courtesy of others. Not right or wrong but I do respect his view of independence, also he never has to worry about breathalysers .

My grandchildren seem to have relatively little interest in driving, but this may be at least partly because of the cost (only one old enough yet, next one next year). With a single income family, and only one driver in a family of six, getting the necessary hours in your logbook is very daunting as much of it would have to be done commercially. I suspect they put it in the 'too hard' basket.

May be some want to be professional pedestrians after they found out how much it costs to run a vehicle per anum

Another few years and they can get a driverless car.

Google can drive them around town and they can hit the "follow me" button and wirelessly latch onto a truck for cross country journeys. By doing the long hauls at night, they can sleep in the car and save on accommodation.

It'll be like the old days when you could fall asleep in your cart, and your horse would make it's way home.

My grandson was 23 before he got a licence, The only reason was because it was an employment requirment

They just cant be bothered.
And its being going on for quite a few years,basically since the log books came in.
A workmate has a wife and a sister in law who have never had a licence.

Yeah my kids and nephews are slow to go. I had my learners the day I became eligible.

I can't understand how they are ok with being dependent on others.

My two did get their licenses but not immediately. They wanted auto but I insisted manual. They are early twenties now and thank me for insisting.

My niece got a auto licence but neither nephew has yet. All under 20.

It might be the log books. It might be that their identity is more about their online gaming skills than real world skills. It might be the rising cost of fuel.

Buggered if I can understand it on a gut level.... independence is everything.

we are happy to support and where possible get our kids to where they need to be while at school.......

once they finish school we wont be at there bec and call but if available happy to assist........my oldest is due to go for his licence in Jan 17.....he won have his hours up by then and i reckon he it might take h im til the end of 17 until he decides to finish his hours and drive the test

living in a capital city, going to uni etc you don't need a car to have independence.
