Merry Christmas everyone!

Common in Myanmar. They get many second hand vehicles from drive-on-left neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh etc. When I was there they got a fleet of second hand buses from Bangkok - think for a moment about this; driving on right, doors on left! And Yangon has very heavy traffic on the main roads.

The country changed from driving on left to driving on the right about 1970-80, on the advice of Ne Win's court astrologer. Possibly also to further distance themselves from the colonial past.

Yes, it certainly makes commuting interesting when the vehicle moves towards the centre of the road, but the driver is on the right and cant see vehicles rushing towards you. The centre line is also only a general guide too in places.
Taxis appear to be mainly worn out old Toyota wagons with engines on gas which won't idle properly and with failed suspensions, but the air con works.
Being a taxi driver would certainly be a stressful job.

First time I was there the taxi we got from the airport was a '56 Chevrolet, running on about five cylinders, with the windscreen looking like a spiders web, and the rear window replaced by unpainted galvanised iron with a flat bit of glass about 20x45cm set in the middle of it. The driver was very careful, because, as he said "the brakes are not good", reinforced by the metal on metal sound every time he used them. Most of the other taxis then were locally made 600cc Mazda utes with a canopy and bench seats along the sides.

But at that stage, import of any vehicles (or anything else except luxury goods for the junta) was virtually impossible. Things eased a few years later.

I have always found that the banner ads on this site reflect your recent internet browsing history. For example, I have recently purchased a couple of things for the shed / workshop on line, and SWMBO asked me to get her some ink cartridges for her printer, which I purchased on eBay.

So ................... the banner ads I am seeing at the moment are mostly for power tools and other workshop equipment (Supercheap Auto seems to be featuring a lot at the moment), plus the occasional eBay ad for printer cartridges and other items I have recently viewed on the eBay site.

Now if you are seeing advertisements for sexy lingerie, I'd suggest that you should be deleting your browsing history and clearing your cookies after you visit some of your more frequently viewed sites. I guess this problem might have started for you shortly after your recent shopping trip to Narrogin. :p:p:p

And Merry Christmas Mick. Hope you're enjoying yourself over there - it is certainly a different destination to where I have traveled in the past. :D

So here's what we did today in Myanmar. Up at 6am and climbed to about 4500 feet on a three hour journey into the southern mountains near the Thai border.
Vehicles were a Toyota Surf and a Nissan ute. The Surf had four brands of ATs on its five wheels, the rear suspension banged a lot and the petrol engine had very little braking, but it got us there and back. The newer Nissan was fine.
So we went up a long way, then down a long way to the valley floor, caught our breath and then went up and up, around numerous switchbacks as they call them here. Amazing views.
Then, just when we thought we could relax, we got to the really steep bit, with loose, large gravel and bounced our way to the top. One of us was car sick by then and the rest needed a cup of tea and a quiet sit.
After attending a wedding and a lazy lunch we set off back down the mountains. Now a lack of engine braking meant the brakes got a workout, even after downshifting. I got him to stop several times for photos to give them a rest.
As it was afternoon we met several Skat logging trucks crawling very slowly up the hill, but avoided meeting any of them on a hairpin bend, which would have been disastrous.
Got back to the city about 5pm for a little lie down before a delicious dinner.
