It's like a facebook for professionals.
I don't post details on it. I use it to keep in touch with colleagues. Yes, there can be scammers on there. I don't connect with people I don't know.
Can anyone enlighten me on this Linkedin, is it a scam, a way to get your info or what, if not what are it's benefits, please, Regards Frank.

As Mick said, there are scammers of course, but they seem pretty good at taking down those links. It can be useful for professional knowledge if you join relevant groups.
It can also be useful for job opportunities, but for that you have to work assiduously to promote yourself and have a good up to date resume. I get regular contacts from recruiters, but they are fishing expeditions, since I am not assiduous.
Very useful if you want to check on prospective employees, or even more useful, the new boss

Mike
As Mick said Facebook for professionals. I tend not to post much there, but having a good profile (eg a summary CV) is very useful if you are looking for a job. I know a number of reputable recruiters who search LinkedIn rather than using a Seek ad. Easier to find someone with the skills, rather than wading through 100's of spam applications.
It's also useful to keep in contact with collegues as they change jobs and provides another communication channel if your email addresses change.
Nothing to be afraid of and treat it the same as you would Facebook
Cheers

I've picked up several consulting jobs from it..
And had many offers
There is a scam about where an email is sent to you saying that you have unread messages on Linkedin.
it refers to a link or attachment.
Seeing I am not a member , I find this unlikely.

Philip the answer to all those scams is simply to never follow the links.
If you think it may be genuine.... log into your account directly from the site rather than via the email... whether it's Linkedin, Paypal, and your bank, your power company of even AULRO..
That way at least you are definitely putting your credentials into the correct site.. and not a scammers copy of it.

ANY details put 'online' are market-able, and WILL be $old or traded. So keep the important details safe at home.
I had a presence there years ago, closed off my profile (so I thought...) but still get occasional stuff from them. I suspect that, like the Other one, your profile can never be erased...
If you feel the need, just be circumspect about what you put on it.
I used to think that LinkedIn was a dodgy dating site!! Used to get e-mails to join up and I used to delete them. Like mentioned above it lets people list their skills and qualifications together with work experience. I suppose it makes head hunting for jobs easier.
Have been on linkedin for years. Find it useful for Keeping in touch with what people I have worked with are up to. When I need to find something out or a contact somewhere have found this network to be very good as you can see where people are or have been.
Have been offered both full time and contract work which would not have known about otherwise.
As with anything on the internet only put up there what you want everyone to know. To much information is always asking for trouble from those who use your information for purposes you might not appreciate. Have seen plenty of fraud where one of their sources of information was Linkedin.
It is up to you who you connect with. Only close friends or anyone who asks. Think it is all dependant on how you want to use it.
Would recommend not connecting with your boss until you have left as your contacts will be advised when you connect with someone and if the boss sees you connecting with a lot of recruiters you might find yourself on the wrong end of an interesting conversation
I do connect with recruiters where they specialise in my area of expertise. Do not bother with the CV collectors who once they have your details just key work search for people in a database. Depends on what you do though I suppose if you have more general skills this type of recruitment might work for you.
Before a business meeting is useful to run participants names through Linkedin to see their background and anything in common or warning signs from their prior employers or roles.
