"Mature" People & New Career for New Year

    Hello All,

I look like starting a new career from scratch in 2017 - well fingers crossed. I turned 54 in the first week of December this year.

I hope to emulate Western Australian Scientist David Goodall, who is still working at the age of 102.

I figure if I keep working that long I might be able to pay off my HECS debt Who knows, I might even be able to make long service leave which is something that I have never achieved before.

There was a Western Australian bloke who finished a plumbing apprenticeship when he was 60 years of age - this was a couple of years ago now.

How old have other people been on the forum when they have kick started a new career? As in a new direction not just a new job in the same vocational areas that you have previously worked in.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

In 1998 (ish) at the age of 40 (ish). I sold up in Sydney and moved my life and family to Bundy. Career change ( electronics to construction), location change, the lot. Kept the wife, kids, family Rover ( P3) and some furniture.

Never to old to change to be happier.

I changed careers at 55, did some training and moved to Thailand to work. It was great. I had grown stale and needed a fresh start. You don't want to die wondering what might have happened if you had been game enough to step out. Go for it.

    Good on you Lionel,

Never too old to make a change.

I was a bit younger, just short of 40 when I ditched a retail management career and moved into IT, starting at the bottom in a tech support role with HP.

At the time I had two kids pre-primary school, a mortgage and was the only bread

Looking back 16 years later and it was the best thing I could possibly have done. One think I have learned is that none of those skills from my previous career where wasted.... they just give me abilities and experience my colleagues in my new role don't have - and that can be an advantage..

Good luck with it..... I'm yet to meet an Land Rover bloke that doesn't enjoy a new adventure
