    My Brain Hurts

    Hello All,

I turned 54 in early December and I am aiming to complete the seemingly never ending story of my dissertation in early 2017.

For the past three days I have been wrestling with my methodology chapter. In particular explaining the differences between indexicality, deixis, and the role of context within discursive analysis - not discourse .... "discursive" as per Harr? and Gillett (1994) The Discursive Mind.

It does not help when some linguists suggest that indexicality and deixis can be used interchangeably. I subscribe to Grimberg's (1994). On Nunberg on indexicality and deixis view that indexicality and deixis are indeed separate entities.

The the thought struggles into my head "why am I doing this?"

You may be thinking "why is Lionel writing about this here?" One excuse is the description in the header for General Chat which states that .... "General Chat Almost anything goes, have a look and drop in a few lines." It could be because I subscribe to the adage that "misery loves company" or alternatively "feel my pain". My wife has gone to bed, so too have the dogs gone to their respective beds; and the fish swimming around in their tank located to the right of my computer monitor are just indifferent.

Oh well I hope to have cracked the explanation of Context before midnight - weee. Now where was I? That's right Song (2010) states that there are three types of context....

P.S. finished the section and saved multiple times by 12:02 am To sleep perchance to dream - of anything else outside of my dissertation!

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Good luck I hope you find your answer. The only word that I actually understood was discourse. Saying that it's been nearly 20 years since finishing my degree in media studies.

I think the thought of 'what am I doing' can be applied in most career/ job situations at times. The important thing is that you're working towards something that matters to you.

Sometimes trying to think does not reveal the answer. Perhaps that answer could be found whilst distracted by another task. Driving the land rover helps.

To really resolve the problems that you face I would:
Start, finish or continue a Landy related project- pick up some spanners
    Dig a hole
    Cut some firewood
When you have finished these you can have a beer
If you still feel that way inclined , sorry I can't help you

    G'day Fitzy and Pocket Rocket

You both brought my post back to the context of Land Rovers. Here is the "Catch 22" - in order to be able to afford these things I need to become self employed. I cannot live off the degree and make it pay for itself without my completing it first.

My Land Rovers need restoration - it takes money to do these things. The items you list are all on the "after" agenda though.

The light is at the end of the tunnel though. Or I simply could be deluding myself

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Now I know why I didn't go to university or do a Degree! But good on you.

My only answer to your problem is "Google it!" Isn't that what everybody does?

I can not learn any more. My brain is so full it's pushing all my hair out.
