Decent zooks are a bit thin on the ground so my money is on a d1 , plenty of low k stockies around and parts ate cheap.
And you don't need much to go most places.

I would have to say jeep! You can get a half decent one for under $1500.
Ugly as sin, cheap, parts very cheap and readily available. The like most cars the 90s models are old enough for people to want to get rid of them but not old enough for them to be trendy = right in the sweet spot". It's amazing what people find desirable after a certain amount of time has gone past, motorbikes that you couldn't give away a couple of years ago are now big bucks, not the nice quality ones either more like the equivalent of a sigma or camira. Ironically I saw a sigma restored a few months ago,

Plus with the jeep you wouldn't feel bad about trashing it and giving it to the scrap guy. Where I would feel bad doing that to a D1. Also there would be no "mission creep" of upgrading or investing any time doing anything to it as it's not even remotely nice.

... If you are ever afflicted with the dreaded Front Wheel Wobble (at speed) - will be easier still when sending it off to be 'cubed'

Servicing should be less expensive, two less spark-plugs to buy... and it could'nt possibly be thirstier than a 3.9 Rover V8...

Our youngest's first car was a little blue Zook when he was an apprentice. It came with a Datsun motor and four speed. Problem was the gearing meant it was doing a zillion revs at 100 kmh. He eventually sold it to a mate who promptly rolled it. It was a fun thing and quite good off road, but not happy on the highway.

Hey Mitch, how about a Roadkill style mission and drive to sydney, buy a beater and fix it up with a $1000 budget to take out to Lithgow and see how far it gets? That'd be good bang for buck

I think it's very clever getting '4 wheeling' and 'budget' in one sentence.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Depends what you want to do, just general offroad exploring/ camping is cheap. rock crawling and mud plugging is what gets expensive.
I go most places with no more than 1/2 a tank of the TDI.
