It would be hard to go past an old Sierra or its predecessors.
Bang for buck, what would make a good budget 4wheel drive? Obviously, does not have to be restricted to Land Rover.
Low dollar, high fun.
Some people spend heaps on a high dollar 4wd and then throw that money on top again to modify it. Surely just as much fun (and less stress from potentially wrecking it) can be had with a cheaper vehicle!
I was thinking a old mid 80's vintage zook sierra, or even a mid 90's jeep cherokee.
Discuss!

Agree with the above Zooks, and throw in the Daihatsu Rocky and predecessors.
I might suggest something differed from above and say 'Holden Drover'
Cherokees can be easily had under $2K. You'd buy them and drive them into the ground for that kind of money, and keep a heap of bodies for parts.
Would love a drive in a Russian UAZ 469. They love them over there. Probably good value to be had in one, but sadly not available over here. Similar design to defender in many ways, same utilitarian concept.

If not a Series 2 SWB, then it has to be a Zook.![]()

Don't be afraid to throw in your own suggestions.
There is a lot of zook love out there, and rightly so, it's a great little fourby.
MQ patrols are relatively affordable, and a solid platform to boot.
I was also going to suggest a Toyota Bundera, but looking thru carsales, the Toyota tax is applied, with models selling for $15K. Affordable, yes, but overpriced if you were to consider this as 7 newer cherokees![]()

I'm not actually after another car. I've already got 4 in the household (there's 2 of us). I'd meet an untimely end if I brought another home.
I think one of the mental roadblocks from going extreme in a car is the fear of breaking it beyond repair. I've been at the bottom of a few tracks thinking to myself 'I could do it... but what if...'. I don't think I'd have the same conundrum in a $1200 beater. And I'd have just as much, if not more fun doing so.
